STi_Bandit Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Got a TSL thundercat downpipe which is supposed to match up to a classic centre pipe. ive laid it on the floor and done a wee test fit and it dont look right atol, there is a good 10mm or ish gap between the flange of the downpipe and the flange of the centre.
RA Dunk Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Playing with exhausts in the bedroom?[] bet he had aprils clothes on again as well lolol[] as for the exhaust i dunno martin, the flanges do look unevenly matched though [:S]
STi_Bandit Posted July 4, 2007 Author Posted July 4, 2007 I dont need sarcastic comments, u may understand that i may be a bit peeved after spending cash on a sports cat that may not be fitting right. i checked with TSL told them i had the Thundercat downpipe and ask numerous time the part need to meet the downpipe and goto the backbox
ScoobyBB Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Looks fine mate both clamps dont need to touch as long as the flanges secure ok.
STi_Bandit Posted July 4, 2007 Author Posted July 4, 2007 My think was this is at the junction between downpipe and centre, which is the spring bolts if iam not mistaken, iam just taken a back by how big the distance is between the two flanges when it pushed together. or is this allowing for movement between engine gearbox vibrrations.
ScoobyBB Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Yeah mate thats correct. Even 2 cut down 17mm Bolts with washers an nuts would also do the job if you dont have the springs.

z1000 Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 It's fine martin, just done my downpipe at the weekend and the flanges were like that and held with spring bolts. Steve
gus the bus Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Aye bandit. Its all fine there. the slight gap is normal and its where the spring bolts go so if its all tightly bolted up will be just the job. Panic over[]
fiestajohn Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 What is the point of the shaped gasket if the two flanges dont come together?
stewart_lusby Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 What is the point of the shaped gasket if the two flanges dont come together? That will be the one for the joint to the back box
STI9 Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Thats very true, but the last time i fitted an exhaust was on my e reg xr2 back in the 90s,so am as much use as kwick fit!![Y]

big den Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Well strangely enough, I just had to return a centre section to TSL bought for my Hawkeye - no way that the floating flange would go far enough forward to connect to the downpipe - the bolts were not long enough even without the springs. Sent pics etc to TSL & they agreed something was not right and checked their stock. Apparently, their supplier made a mistake with the production run & someone forgot to machine the inside edge of the floating flange so that it could come far enough forward!!!! Now waiting on a replacement!! Might not be the case here but worth checking! Den
thewelsho Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Yip. When I got mine fitted at Meercat, the guy showed me it in the ramp and it was like yours. So I quizzed him about it and he said that's the way the way it goes. I felt like an indiot for asking by you don't learn if yo don't question however stupid one might appear!
scoobyiain Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 If in doubt ask. There is no such thing as a stupid question.
STi_Bandit Posted July 4, 2007 Author Posted July 4, 2007 Cheers for the input guys, ive fired off the pics to TSL just to be 100% sure but going by the comments all seems to be ok was just a weeeeee bit shocked when i first saw it and used a few swear words. Bandit
