Fixed Penalty Numberplate

Got stopped in Portlethen tonight!

Got my plates at Autosave Bridge of Don. Baldy bloke with Skyline sold me the small plate for the front as I have the FMIC. He told me it was legal because my car was an import. He showed me a newspaper clipping saying that there was no legal or illegal plate size for an import.

Got a £30 fixed penalty. So P*****d Off!! I am a young buck in a fast car and would not take the chance of illegal doings as I'm pulled on a regular basis.

Just so you know when I was in the cop car the had a gizmo that was bleeping as all the cars went past. (one of those number plate Doo Das)

Your,e right I'm going back to Autosave cos if that newspaper clipping is still there then they can whistle for the £30.

Seems a shame that if any terrorist want to drive their cars into Aberdeen that they may only get caught if they commit a traffic offence.

Definately.

The plod were in a car coming towards me on the opposite side and I'm wondering if they couldn't pick up the plate.

That's a pretty poor show from autosave!

I've heard rumours about that import rule but no idea how legitimate it is.

As for UK law that's clearly an illegal plate for so many reasons.  The font looks like the old style font which is not allowed these days.  Any new plate beign made up even the old prefix style must be using the new font. Font height must be somethign like 77mm high. distance between fonts must be 9mm and border distance between edge of font and edge of reflective plate must be 11mm or something (cant remember exact values but its around that).

Also the plate must have the official british standard mark on the lower right hand side of the plate and at least the postcode of the company who made up the plate on the bottom center of the plate.

I dont have the offial regulations saved on this computer but if you go onto the dvla website I'm pretty sure the correct regulations are there somewhere..

Please dont try and argue this with authorities but I've heard stories from bikers that as long as the British standard mark is on the plate it is considered legal.  That sounds dodgy to me but there you go. Same deal with bikers who bet a sticker of the british standard mark and shove it on their illegal exhausts and get away with it..

I have the facilities at home to make up proper UK plates or the proper size with the british standard mark on them but I've only made up my own plates (wanted a narrower one for te front so there wasnt too much white space at either side. Looks more natural now looked odd before.)  However I am concerned about making up plates for other people (not just that I need more practice before I do that) but if I did what I would do is write "NOT FOR ROAD USE" on the back of the plate even though they are probably 100% legal.  From a seller point of view that covers me from the authorities knocking on my door asking about dodgy plates I was selling.  I can turn round and officially say that the plates were not designed for road use. That doesn't mean they would be illegal, it's just covers my back..

As everyone else said go back and have words with autosave, I have seen loads of people get illegal plates from them.

My feeling about it is as long as the plate is using a sensible clear font and is clearly readable from a certain distance it should be considered legal.  What I don't like is people who put extra studs on their plate to make them read something else and put silly illegible fonts on there.  Other than that I don't see a problem. Except the law is the law and we should really abide to it unless were willing to accept beign punished for breaking it.  In this case The seller has mislead the customer into thinking they are buying a legal product when it clearly isn't (Same deal as me with the tinted windows on my car, but that's a whole different topic). It's a right sod of a situation to be in.  the fine need to get paid, question is can autosave cough up for their mistake?

. o O (Ok, enough rambling from me)

That plate is ridiculous mate, you're asking for it with a number plate that size.

Have a look at this pdf file from the DVLA.. There is restriction on size of character used, but cars with restricted space for number plates have diff rules. My car a Import 05 has a smaller section at the front for a number plate to attach, so it used the restricted space sizing. hope that makes some sense. Basically if you have restricted space you don't need to put in the 33mm group spacing just a 10mm spacing (the same as between characters)

I have been stopped afew times about this too.

From the little book the traffic boy produced imports are allowed to have lettering 64mm tall but all other aspects of the plate (spacing and bordering) have to be the same to abide by UK traffic laws.

However smaller square plates are allowed.

So just make sure that your lettering is not smaller that 64mm and it should be ok..

Just been into Autosave and got a new number plate and £30 for the fine. Can't do much better than that eh?

i didnt think he would have paid up TBH, good going from the chap [:(

No Quibbles either!

Upshot from the plod is that as long as the lettering measures 46mm with 10mm reflective border round the outside then plate is legal . This means I can cut the larger one to size.
