  7. What Next? Number plates that contain microchips enabling cars to be tracked on the roads are to be tested by the Government and could soon be in use in the UK. The high-tech plates transmit information such as Vehicle Identification Numbers to data readers placed alongside roads, which can be picked up at any speed and up to 300 feet away. Making use of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, the tagged plate scheme is said to be a massive improvement over cameras that use character recognition and only have a 75 to 90 per cent accuracy rate. The Department for Transport officially approved the microchipped plates last week and testing is expected to start towards the end of this year. A DfT spokesman said that they want to see if the scheme would make number plates harder to clone or forge, in response to the growing trend of commuters in the London congestion charge zone using fake plates to avoid paying the charge or subsequent fines. Forged plates are also frequently used by organised criminals when commiting robberies in order to avoid being traced. Already in use in San Francisco to collect road tolls, the use of this new technology is being closely watched by police forces in the US, which are interested in the possiblities of using it to track uninsured drivers, car thieves or even to foil terrorists using their roadways. However, civil liberty groups are typically wary, warning that such RFID systems could easily become a "back door surveillance tool". What do you think, is it a sensible use of technology or are you wary of the idea of being tracked when you're out and about? Craig

  18. Checkpoint were good and advised on what i should be fitting speakers wise any way i have my amps Well they suggested the speakers etc for the front and rear doors to me They retail at 250 a set all in all stores so 500 alone for front and rear doors So i find somewhere/someone selling them at 125 a set so i bought them brand new as well Half price 250 both sets Sorted They suggested i get a stealthbox for my sub again retailing at arond the 150 mark, i sourced it for 80 They quoted me £1100 to supply the above wiring etc for my 3 amps. So i save myself nearly 300 quid go back to get a date and tell them i have the items they suggested There responce...... If your not buying the stuff from us we wont fit it?? Now they would have made themselves a right packet on wiring etc and it would have been a nice little earner plus they were asked to supply and fit a parrot or similar bluetooth kit So i would guess for cables fuse carriers etc etc they would have had a good £300 fitting plus £100ish for the bluetooth, But no they dont want to know??? Strange but true i wish i was in a business that i could afford to turn down work Especially when i know that the mark up on car ice wiring is in excess of 55% trade price is buttons compared to retail and that a fact So checkpoint no ... let me down Craig
