  1. I used them recently for some minor work. The laddie Duncan didn't have much to say (wasn't a particularly interesting job he was doing on my motor to be fair), but I cannae complain about the end result. Give the shop on the left a wee sweep up now and again though guys - presentation etc

Glad to hear you're happy with your 2.5. Mind me asking how much that set you back, all-in?

I built the engine myself and ordered parts in from Ron at Raw Performance in the states who is amazingly cheap (and helpful with customs). The parts were approx £1750 including shipping and import duty etc for the following.

New Ej257 casing (honed to suit pistons)

    CP Pistons

    Pauter Rods

    Cometic Gaskets

    Cossy main bearings

Steve Whitson at SW Motorsport did some chamber work on the Heads for the larger bore which was an additional £100. (He ported these previously on another build of mine)

I was already running a TD05/06 20g, FMIC, GT spec headers and 3 inch exhaust etc from my 2.0L so I re-used most of the ancilliaries and put them on the 2.5.

    It pulls like a train!

  2. Took the wagon to Duncan at Hypertech today following the 2.5 conversion. What a decent chap. Very friendly, super knowledgeable and sensibly priced.

Rather chuffed with the results - 389 bhp and 401 lbft of torque. I ran three maps with varying degrees of ignition advance but had to keep things sensible as running the standard 5 speed box.

  3. Colin's 22B never came from Nobles originally.

    It came from Prodrive.

Nicky Grist and Dave Lapworth also were given one each at the end of 1998.

And they all had build number 000, on the interior plaque.

    David

That's interesting - Colin N said he had sourced it for the big man!

  4. I regularly visit Alex Noble & Son on a Sat morning to pick up parts for the forged 2.5 project I am building.

Colin Noble mentioned he had something special in the workshop I might be interested in. Low and behold it was Colin MacRae's personal 22b. It had only covered 10,000 KM and was absolutely immaculate. It was almost as if it had just rolled off the production line. Turned out the garage had sourced it specially for him some years ago and had purchased it back from the MacRae family following the sad demise of the great man.

Good to see such a fine example of such a wonderful machine.

  5. Well just off the phone to Stevie W, not long back from the man him self Andy F just had the car remapped and well im very impressed with the figures .... they will follow shortly he he .. cant stop smilling :icon_salut:

There is defo going to be a PB broke this year

Just like to thank Stevie Whitson of SW Motorsport for his brilliant engineering and patience with me lol he has made the car what it is today ??

And to Andy F for his magic.

    Much Appreciated fellows

    Roll on Crail he he

Couldn't agree more about Steve. He is currently doing the machining work on my 2.1 stroker and also porting my heads. He is a first class operator and more than happy to share his expertise unlike some other engine builders.

Is yours the white classic with the 2.5 and the 321T?

  6. Hi all, looking for some advice

I’ve been getting work done to my 95 wrx that I’ve had for the last six months, mostly mechanical stuff, making sure the engines sound. Planning on using it for some track days at knockhill, so I think the next step is upgrading the brakes. I’ve been looking at sti 4 pot callipers, and brembo’s. Thinking I may save money with the sti 4 pots, but also thinking the Brembo’s might be worth splashin the extra dosh

Can anyone give me an idea, how much of a difference there is between these brakes on track days?

Standard subaru 4 pots are cast iron and retain alot of heat and have a small piston diamater. Brembos are alloy, have a larger piston area and pad size and dissipate heat a lot more effectively. Big difference.

However, if you are going to uprate your calipers for track use, I would recommend also upgrading to two piece disks with alloy bells and powervane type rotors as they are much lighter and much more effective at shedding heat, thus reducing fade.

I upgraded to compbrake pro-race1 4 pot calipers and 330mm disks with alloy bells and they are simply amazing. Before I would have to come in every 6-7 laps and let the brakes cool, even with red-stuff pads and racing fluid.

With my current set up, fade has been eliminated during track use, I can stay out as long my tank's full and I have shaved seconds from my lap times.

  7. What you need is a pre MY06 car. The reason that you can have twin boost maps is down to the design of the ECU. The ECU has two boost maps already available; one is used for automatic cars, the other for manual cars. So at manufacture stage the correct map is chosen for the relevant car at installation. However, with Andy's bag of tricks he is able to use both of these maps and allow the driver to switch between them in the aforementioned fashion. People with the Hawkeye cars are not afforded the luxury of twin maps because Subaru no longer produce automatic Imprezas.

this functionality is actually a component of Ecutek software rather than it being tuner specific. We're working on developing this feature on the romraider project and I'm hopefully testing map switching ability on my car over the coming weeks. If anyone wants this functionality for free then keep an eye on the Romraider website:

    www.romraider.com.

    Woof Woof.

  8. I need to get my hands on a new 2.5 sti block, I know exactly where I can get one from (a Subaru dealer), but I'm not really wantin to pay the prices. So does anyone know anywhere I can get one for a decent price? I saw a group buy going on a while back for them anything like that going on just now? I don't really want a refurbed one I'd rather a new one.

    Thanks in advance amigo's

Flat4online sell the block only delivered for £750 or the short engine for £1495 delivered. I take it you're pulling together a built unit?

  9. Sound's interesting wot car you dropping the Block in ?? what sort of power you looking for ?? Keep us updated hope its a classic ..all the best mate

    Chris :rotfl:

thanks - it's a bug eye I'm afraid. In the long term I'm aiming for 500bhp but will need to do it in stages as the financial outlay is somewhat scary. In the meantime I'll continue to run the old faithful td05/06 20g until I can afford something rotated!

  10. Thats correct mate, the way ahead unless you want to go through gear boxes if you do the 2.5..there is probs other ways of doing it, this was the opinion of most people..and a good clutch also.

Wise move - I'm about to put together a 2.2 closed deck forged stroker and am debating doing a 6 speed or a PPG conversion at the same time.

  11. Hi mate

I bought it from Boris B from here, the only mods it has are prodrive ECU and prodrive back box. It's not thrown any CEL's yet. I changed the plugs on friday to see if i can narrow it down by process of elimination. I checked the ICV and found that most of the O ring in the valve had disintegrated and was drawing air so i replaced that and it no longer hisses. I grudge taking it to garages to have it plugged in :rotfl:

It only seems to start spluttering after a long journey.

Have you checked the MAF for dirt/contamination?

  12. Hi Guys

Does anyone know if ECU Explorer or any other diagnostic software works through the OBD port with a 99 classic wagon? i had VAG-com for my Cupra which worked with a Flea bay cable and was looking for some software along the same lines for monitoring different sensors in the engine etc.... I'm getting an intermittent spluttering problem and want to see if i can track it down through software if its possible. :rotfl:

    Cheers

Hi - ECU Explorer won't recognise the protocols on pre 2000 ECUs unfortunately. You should be able to buy something similar to VAG com for your scooby of flea bay. Last resort you can always take your car to Nobles in Penicuik and they will use their diagnostic software but it costs £30 ish and you can expect a load of disapproving and ill-informed comments from Colin Noble about any mods you have done and how you should only use Prodrive parts etc.

Is the car throwing any CELs?

  13. Hey folks just thought i would keep you updated with what's happening with the car for the peeps that did not know i was planning to do the 2.5 conversion on my classic STI.

The Good news it the battle has begun, the car was picked up today by SW motorsport by Stevie his self :rotfl: ..im due back in June to the UK so the car will be ready for then he did inform me it was a tight scheudle however he will have it done he will have to break the car in for me.. with the 1500 miles i think. then unleash the beast.

And getting it booked in with Mr A Forrest for his magic.

After a long chat with him i think im going to be happy with the result's with big BHP and Touque so hopefully give those evos a run for there money..

Also fitting some nice extra goodies to it some nice 6 pot's, will hopefully get pics of Stevie so i can post for you all too see of the build so will post them when i get them just looking forward to driving it again, after driving 5 Ton B6 Armoured Land cruisers all over the desert..

Then Bring on Crail hopefully will get a better time than my first attemp at crail ermmmm 24/06/2007 ID 11 - Run 235 - Time 12.970 that was my fastest Run hopefully another few or extra horses will help me beat that lol..oh and a better launch aswell it was pants to be honest and maby some 1 else driving ha ha.

    Roll on June :rotfl:

    Chris

Hi - what gearbox will you be running with the 2.5?

  14. lookin sweet, c'mon the wagons :laughing4:

Woof woof - beautiful car. Great to see another wagon being an owner myself.

A friend of mine is also a wrx wagon owner and an avid skier. He got the windows blacked out and spent 6 weeks touring the french alps during the winter. He's tight as an ant's chuff and didn't want to pay for accommodation so he actually slept in it at night in car parks where normal camper vans are not permitted. Madman.
