just a evo 4
lol Don
Don
Remark was intended for Grieg in response to his reply in post 7. I have no illusions about my car being competative this season even with John concentrating on other avenues this year. So having my "ass whipped" is not really a concern
-
Have to be honest was more impressed in John's car armed with an AFR gauge in one hand and a wide band in the other and him torching up a main road near Boyndie adjusting the map in between runs in a Scottish sprint. That said never been in the gobstopper so its all relative
-
if the deal goes through then yes i'll be taking the only 2 good things to come from a newage and putting them in a classic
john my car budget is only 7k so it will be tight to say the least but i'm always up for a challenge,no labour charge always makes a big difference as you know
Wish I had known your budget was tight would have bid higher
-
Not a fan of the body kit, the wide arch wings are smart tho. Must admit there are lots to admire on the car though
-
Would only use John at progrip he has set up my road car and race RA
-
Have you phoned Alyn as £950 is a ridiculous price
-
And what foolish thing were you saying when you were told that arch lol
Not a foolish comment I made but nice try cant ever remember making such a thing
-
Phone Alyn , he'll keep you right
As Frank says

I was once told that its better to appear a fool than open your mouth and prove it
-
Is that a new type of single seater
-
i beleive it does not matter what ratio diff you run as it will just change the ratio of split from front to back say standard is 60 - 40 and you put a different diff in front you might get 50- 50 or 70- 30 or thats what ive been told as my red one ran more split to front,
its all a dccd does after all and you can do it manually by fitting dofferent ratios to each end , ideally you want same as standard
unless my reading up on transmissions is wrong
Don
Dont go changing your box or diff mate leave it alone
-
The set up does away with the servo which accounts for most of the weight saving
-
mmm I am liking that. more ideas
-
Think he needs to undestand about cornering forces on track and the effects these have on tyres. Maybe fit some 145x45x17's to the RA they should be lighter and save a bit of weight
-
the tyre size on my jeep in 31/10.50/15 and they are called imperial sizes and yes you can get bigger but i dont want to have to cut bits off jeep to fit them!!!! for those that dont know!!!! but i'm not gonna start going into depth on tyres and wot they are coz at the end of the day they are black rubery things that fit on wheels and go round!!!!!!! and they dont have bigger tyres to fit over the brembo brakes on the sti, coz i had the brembos on my classic and i ran 215/45/17 you will find that the new sti has different offset of wheel compared to the other bangers. end of rant.
BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY THESE ARE TRACK TYRES SO YES JOHN YOU CAN RUN THESE SAFELY.

Its been a while since I updated the thread with some progres. The time available on the car has been severely hampered by work comittments which included nearly 3 weeks away working in Budapest. Nice city, well the pubs are nice anyway especially the ones where it was only 90p a pint - result this, however, didnt help getting the car ready.
The suspension is pretty much now all in place with the rear drop links to fit and the Geometry to be set up by John at Progrip.
I have spent a little bit of time tarting up the inside as it was a bit of a mess last year so I have stripped everything out and painted the inside and the boot. I have also fitted a new dash as supplied by Stevenson Motorsport spares and repairs.
Its not perfect but looks a lot better than before and it really isnt worth spending a great deal of time on this side of things anyway.
Next it was time to remove the gearbox and Engine which were removed in quick time.
With the engine out an hour with a green pad and some elbow grease cleaned the engine bay up a treat. At the same time I removed the battery tray and washer bottle bottom mount which are both surplus and just getting in the way and adding weight so they had to go.
The new engine is now sitting waiting to be fiitted Its another quality product from Chy at Pennine Subaru really looking forward to seeing what it will do this year although i know I will not be using the engine to its full capabilities
First I need to finish painting the new inlet manifold and then swap the required sensors wiring and fuel pipework across to the new engine as well as the sump and headers. I am also going to fit a 71 deg thermostat just to keep the engine a little cooler as I had a lot of over heating issues last year. The inlet manifold turned out really well, the wedge was supplied by Carl Davey, top work as usual Carl thanks for the help and the welding was done by Les Mutch from near Ellon up in Aberdeen. Les also competes in the Scottish Hillclimb and Sprint Championship and owns his own business doing lots of welding amongst other enginerring things. If anyone is looking at rotating their phase 1 or phase 1.5 manifold drop Les an email he is a top guy and will sort you out and knows what he is doing as he has rotated a phase 1 and a phase 1.5 for me .

There is still a fair bit to do and time is rapidly running out. There is some fabrication required to completely change the routing of the intercooler pipework, change the radiator to an alloy one and fit smaller fans in a different location as well as have some new power steering pipework made up and ........ the list goes on and on
Just waiting on a some goodies arriving from AS Performance so I can carry on, I think Alyn down at ASP has a bigger alladins cave than John as he always seems to have everything in stock as well as some obscure things that I just couldnt find - result.

oops double post

I ran Millers CFS 10W60 in my race RA last year so I would say it is spot on
-
Duncan - stop talking about it and just get registered for it.
Car is meant to be driven, not sitting in a car park for most of its life
-
Do you have a phase II (754) box? Never heard of that problem on the earlier phase I boxes but have heard of it on loads of phase II's
Well I can assure you it happens I had the debris to prove it
-
will you be running at any of the test days this weekend ?
without an engine or gearbox it might be a bit pointless
-
Its fine mate I have more than enough things to buy to keep my bank balance occupied
-
Craig it could also be the nut on the 5th gear shaft coming loose, its a known prob, thats what destroyed the box in my RA and the initial symptoms were issues with selection of 5th gear. Or maybe something as simple as a synchro.
The box grieg has is basically the same as the box I used and thrashed to death for a whole season without issue. It was my spare box which became surplus at the end of the year as I picked up another stronger varient. The box was unused by me and should be a good strong box for any car up to about 330bhp and similar torque, that said there are no guarantees in life apart from we will all croak at some point
The box you had was it a TY752 or a TY754
What rear diff do you have as from memory i am pretty sure this box needs a 4.11 rear diff. That in itself shouldnt put anyone off as I am pretty sure John could provide a suitable diff at a reasonable price if required and it would take an hour to change.
I personally wouldnt run the RA gear ratio's on a sprint/hillclimb car. Having taken John's advice i fitted a uk spec gearbox which had gearing more suited to my needs i.e as few gear changes as possible. The RA gearing would have resulted in excessive gear changing and as a result lost time.
If I had the money at the minute I would buy this box back in an instant as I only sold it to raise funds I didnt actually want to sell it, so if you want to offer a cut price return grieg give me a phone.
Hope this helps

Sure have but the car is know where near ready and I am in budapest working which isnt helping
