Think I'm going to need to invest in an DSLR. Loving some of these pics.
Can borrow mine anytime, that will give you a little feel for it before you buy. Canon 350D 35 - 55 mm & 70 - 300mm telefoto Sigma lens. Comes with Canon 440 flash unit as well.

This might be your car ?
Tis indeed my automobile except its not so mobile at the mo! Splendid pic, as are all the others

one word - nice
Another word: Yes!

Andy - you are a bad man ! With any luck I shall try and not darken your door ( but whilst I have your attention - can you do switchable maps for the MY06's ?)
Not possible I'm afraid. The switchable maps was a feature of older cars where the ECU had dual maps; one for manual cars and one for automatic cars. When used in a manual car, the other map was not used (I'm not sure it was dual maps, but dual somethings!!). Anhyhoo, the Hawkeyes don't come in automatics, so the dual feature ECUs that could be used to provide two cycles was dropped. This is the gist of it but I'm sure some of the terminology is incorrect. What do I know about cars?
Silver Bullet? I like that. I used to call my MY04 Toyota Celica that, but your chariot is far more deserving on such a title. Be carful when mapping your bad boy; I have lost an engine and a gear box so far!
Good luck with it my man, I'm sure it will provide you with as much, if not more pleasure as Black Beauty.

any further news on subaru assist ?
Picked the car up today. It's with the dealer, so I'll just have to wait and see what they say.
-
stop thinking about mods and get your car fixedlolol john already thinking about your next mod
deal with this issue first dude
Tut! Yeah ok...
-
Haha its ok Peter, I'd gladly pass that priviledge onto the new owner....
Cheers,
Grant
Just waiting on Subaru assistance arriving... will keep all posted on the outcome.
Peter, much did Greers sell the Hawkeye box?

Pictures, socket sizes and everything! Man, you guys are good!
Thanks!!!!
What does that frame do? Does it prevent the car from flexing making it stiffer in the corners?
-
It's one "big" plug at the bottom of the gearbox John. Place a container underneath, undo plug and just let it fall into the container, you can pick it out later when the box has finished draining.
Na, I jacked it up and crawled under it and there is all this plastic sh17 everywhere, The only thing that I can see, is a big round plug-type thing but its not a normal nut. It has a kinda star-shaped indention in it and looks like it needs a special tool to undo it. Its all out of my league, I think I'll drive it to the stealers on Firday and bend over.
-
it should be a 16/17 mm socket john like alan said thats all you do
Ok, I take it the gear box is the big cast thing attached to the back of the engine, yes? Therefore near the front end of the car? I see there is a little square cast type thing at the back too, man I can see a disaster looming.
Oh, I menat to say: I drove the car and It goes ok without sounding worse, but I can't select third gear.

Drain gear oil? Utter idiots guide please!

Indeed.

Don't look at number 33
Oh dear, I saw that coming.
I see the Tribeca made it in there too... fully justified!
-
How do I drain the gear oil to see if there is any particles in it? Also, can I jsut go to any garage and pick up replacement fluied?
-
dont give up after comming this far John, with your block now sorted and a new box your troubles should all be behind you now
Clutch, Diffs, bearings, driveshafts... still plenty to go wrong!

PPG = Pfitzner Performance Gearbox.
As for costs, I think it boils down to a no brainer in terms of uprated drivetrain given your circumstances.
Either PPG or 6 speed is going to be out of your price range and if it were me in that position i'd try and source a 5 speed Sti box and rear diff. (that's if you want to keep the car) This option gives better ratios (imo) for both road and track use at your level and in terms of cost, shouldn't be much more than going down the secondhand route of a std box. Costs depend on being in the right place at the right time.
If you wanted to stretch to a PPG, then i'd go here. Prices for the parts alone are also on this site.
Now that I have picked myself up off the floor...
Thanks mate, you have been a great help.
-
sorry mate just tring to help
if you are going to get rid of it would it not make more sense to get an STI ,then if you wanted to mod again you have a better model to start with.
A GB270 is just another WRX afterall.
just my tuppence worth
If I got rid I'd be done with Imprezas and performance cars period. I had my shot, it was great while it lasted but I can't sustain the cost of this rather expensive hobby

I'll try and simplify.
You have a choice of finding a like for like replacement or looking into buying something different more suitable for your power/torque.
Two options basically:
5 speed PPG gearkit to build into your gearbox.
Any PPG gearkit will be man enough to cope, so comes down to choice.
PPG helical synchro gearkit. Your std gearbox has helical gears and synchros, so this option is the same as what you have but much stronger gears to withstand the torque. It is almost as quiet as your own box.
PPG straight cut synchro gearkit. The difference here is that you use straight cut gears. These straight cut gears will whine when in use but are stronger than the helical cut gears, so can withstand even more torque, but are noisy in use.
PPG dog box. These are also straight cut gears but use dogs instead of synchros. This type of box will stand up to even more abuse than the above and you can slam in the gears when changing, but can be a pig to drive on the road.
6 speed boxes:
Any 6 speed box will do, but imo the Forrester has nicely spaced gear ratios whereas others have short ratios in the 1st few gears, so you could be throwing gear changes left right and centre with higher power, so could soon tire of that.
The other issue with 6 speeders is that you may need the matching diff to go along with it, but you will need the 6 speed gearlever, gear linkage and propshaft to go along with the box before fitting.
How much for the cheapest PPG stuff? What does PPG stand for and what is it exactly, a bunch of cogs and stuff?
I can't push the finances to a 6-speed with all the other bits I need to get to match it up, so its a quick-fix and a cheap-fix I think is the only way to go. This of course means the box will break again, but I guess if I keep it off track then it will last longer. Then again, why have all that power and no track use, this is what makes me think bowing out now is perhaps the best option.
-
id reckon the gearbox sounds like the same as when mine went
chocolate 5speed gearbox cant handle all that torque you got mate, most likely the 3rd gear thats knackered very common fault with 5speed subaru gearboxes
Oh! Now that you say that, the condition is worse in 3rd gear. Looking more and more like a GB - GREAT!
-
John, have you jacked the car up yet and checked anything?
If we're having a sweep what are the odds on it being a dead animal trapped under the car?
Yeah, jacked it up last night and had a look and there are no visible signs of breakage. When I get home today I am going to jack it up again and check for play in the hubs etc and give the brakes a good look over. If I can't see anything visible then I suppose it has to be gear box or diff (even though I have no idea what a diff is
).
Next I will drive the car at 2 mph down a quiet road and call the AA. That is what I should have done last night when it went about 3 miles from home. I'll get it taken to Subaru and see what they come up with. I don't suppose anyone knows a skilled Scooby mechanic who'd come to the hosue and give me a 100% diagnostic?
-
Wow. Big font Peter!
Nothing to be surprised about. I was very happy with my straight cut synchro PPG kit.
I wouldn't recommend a dog kit PPG for road use.
However, if i was to build another car again to this power level and mainly for road use, i would choose the 6 speed Forrester box option over the PPG for it's ratios and quietness in operation. At the level i was at when i sold the car and the abuse the 6 speed box took over the following season on the drag racing scene, it's worked very well.
The other option Welsho can look at if he wants to remain 5 speed is the helical synchro PPG kit, which will be quieter than the straight cut synchro, but i believe (haven't heard) it's slightly noisier than a std 5 spd box.
All that was right over my head!!!! I'm outta my depth with this stuff, time for a sensible car again me thinks

If it was a gearbox then AlanG suggestions is best as it takes the least amonut of time.
DILEMA:
Ok what do I do. If I try to get a warranty claim I need to get the car there, let them assess and get the car back if I get a knockback. Then, I have to take the car to whomever I want to install the new box (Hypertech most liekly). As you can see this is a whole lot of hassle.
Alternatively, I need to get the fault diagnosed for certain, then get it transported then get it sorted with 2nd hand bits. This will of course incur the cost of transfer as well.
So any suggestions that can make this all clearer for me!!!?
-
Sounds exactly like gearbox unfortunately.
The way you describe the symptoms Welsho is the same as what i've experienced over the years.
You're probably hearing the broken teeth off a gear which then catches and either jarrs or jams a gear until it drops and frees motion again.
I wouldn't drive it if i were you as it could lock up solid and then you're stuck needing a lift on to a flatbed.
My failures have never been when under power. They always break when there's little load on the gearbox!
Cheers Alan. If it is a gear box, can it be re-built as opposed to buying a whole new one?
-
John, just buy my STi and be done with it
I would, but its too slow
Help!

well observered. I come under the bridge and lift at the pit exit doing about 110mph before easiing onto the brakes and downshifting from 4th to third. I keep it in third all the way to the back straight thereafter. Upshifting into 4th at about 6.5k before downshifting into 3rd then second as I enter the corner.
