TURBOEDD Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 where is the best place to start looking for a standard or (minimal modifications) impreza type r version 5 or 6? or would i be best served to get one imported? if so who should i get in contact with about it? thank you
dan_jess Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 Theres usually a few on Pistonheads for sale. There is a considerable jump in price from the Version 4 to Version 5 and 6. So decide whether you want to keep it standard or modify it. No point payin the extra for the newer car if your going to replace parts later. If you import one yourself you will need to get a model report and a SVA test for any car under 10 years old. There are big savings to be made in getting a car from Japan but costs start mounting up once you have to Register, MOT, model report and SVA the car you choose. Have a look tho, theres lots of good cars in the auctions. www.autoadvan.co.uk Best of luck in your hunt [Y]
RA Dunk Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 a nice low milage RA on there http://www.autoadvan.co.uk/car-details-4121828.html pity about the body kit [+o(]
dan_jess Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 Is that the S201 boot spoiler? Theres an RA on www.japperformanceparts.co.uk, has a blown engine but it looks a good one for a project
TURBOEDD Posted June 2, 2007 Author Posted June 2, 2007 spot on for the post, im just starting to enquire about the type r at the moment,i need all the advice i can get. are there any major problems with these cars? engine, gearbox, diff and so on? cheers
dan_jess Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Im sure some of the Techie people in here will help you out with any questions you have Heres a good site for all things Type R and RA www.type-r-ra.co.uk
Chapman81 Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Hi Dan, I can source you any Type R direct from Japan. I have already sourced a few subaru's for some sidc members. Last one was to Kevin and George Paris. Sourced them a track day RA. What colour do you have in mind? max mileage? etc etc. You can contact me on 07877200366. My name is Stewart. You can also e-mail me on sc-imports@hotmail.co.uk Your best bet would be to import a standard car then get it mapped for uk fuel to be on the safe side. I think most type r engine failure is due to this. You don't see many nice examples in the uk. Most have been modified. There was a very nice one for sale on pistonheads and scoobynet a while ago but have not seen anything since. Regards, Stewart
dan_jess Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Cheers for the comment Chapman, but its TURBOEDD thats looking for a type R. Tho u have made me curious, PM me what kinda price your able to get a 98 type R for please. Theres time to pull me from the darkside yet []
Chapman81 Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Sorry about that Turboedd/Danterzo. Price depends on many factors such as, Auction Grade, Mileage, Colour, Auction Day, Age etc etc. To be more accurate I would need more details from you. For example, what version of Type R? 3,4,5,6? Max mileage? Preferred Colour?, Minimum Grade if car is purchased through auction. If you could PM me or reply with some those details I can look at recent market values and give you a rough idea what it would cost. Now is the time to buy 1997 model Type R's that don't require sva tests making them cheaper to get on the road. Regards, Stewart Chapman

The first thing I would say is get a test drive of one first if possible. Because of the differences with the transmissions they handle completly differently to a standard classic, it may not be your liking. There is a price jump from the 4's to the 5's and 6's, this is down to the minor styling changes and the fact that the 5's and 6's have phase 2 engines and gearboxs. They can also be remapped via Ecutek which the 4's can't. That said there is no such thing as a "bad" type r, on;y good ones and better ones. []
exvaux Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 As said before take a test drive, especially on a motorway cos the close ratio box can be a pain to live with at 60 mph if you do lots of motorway drivin,i dont so mine is ok but and this is the one biggie with the type R they can be very lively with the back ends stepping out so check for damage, trust me i know [:'(]
Chapman81 Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Yeah I know what you're saying. I had a version 5 1998 type r. The rear end was very lively. 4000RPM @ 80MPH. The V-Ltd models have a longer 5th Gear 4000RPM @ 90MPH instead. The Type R is not an everyday car but ideal for weekends and trackdays. They look excellent as well. Very rare.
exvaux Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 as chapman says they can be uncomfortable as everyday cars with modified exhausts,i use mine everyday but i only work 4 miles from my house via good driving roads, get a good one and theres not much will keep with you, even after a year i still smile when im driving it but go for the v5 or 6 its worth it there is a BIG difference between them and the V3 or 4,ps mine is a 99 V5 [H]
dan_jess Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Isnt the 1997 V3 Type R meant to be one of the rawest Impreza's made?
Chapman81 Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Yeah they are pretty manic. You don't see them at all. Very hard to find in Japan as well. Most type R are v5 or v6.
TURBOEDD Posted June 4, 2007 Author Posted June 4, 2007 hello stewart the details im would be looking for are; colour - white/black/blue Milage - low as possible i have no idea about the grading system. and i would be looking for a version 5,6. i'd have to give yourself a phone and get more information. cheers eddie
Chapman81 Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Hi, Thanks for the details. Send all your vehicle info to my e-mail account sc-imports@hotmail.co.uk I will then start sourcing suitable Type R's. I can then contact you if I find anything you may be interested in. If you would like to know more then I can meet up with you to explain the process and grading etc etc. Just contact me on 07877200366. Cheers, Stewart.
Chapman81 Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Hi Dan, I'm from a small town called Torrance 8 miles north of Glasgow. It's between Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch. I'm not too far away from you. Cheers, Stewart.
fai17 Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Hi Dr Chapman Was nice speak to you today @ Greersport...did you get a good look at the Chinese 400?
Chapman81 Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Hi Peter, I'll need to get a wee shot in the chinese 400. Looks nice and tidy under the bonnet. Will try to pop through to see you some Saturday night. Was through at Cairneyhill last night. I had to change a fuel pump for a customer hence why I was down at greersport. Also popped in for George and Kevin Paris on my way back. There 2 Door Coupe is smart. By the way if you do decide to sell your car will you be selling it with all the mods? Cheers, Stewart.
drb5 Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Chapman, where do you get a model report from then, for a Type-r?
Chapman81 Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 modelreports.com There is no specific model report for a 2 door so you have to use a 4 door saloon model report. They are both within the specific weight tolerances. The only ones that are a bit tricky are the early 1997 models but most don't require SVA now anyway. 1998, 1999 and so on are not a problem. Hope this answers your question. Stewart
