Have owned an rs turbo and unless you get a good one it will cost you alot to keep it on the road. i had an 88 f series 2 and bought it with 75k on the clock with just a chip and full exhaust. Owned mine for 2 years and done 6k miles in the 2 years but still managed to spend near £7k. great cars when they are running fine and would have another one in a minute if i knew it was not going to cost me much to keep. Very hard to find good examples nowadays most have been highly modded or re-built wich leads to un-reliability.

Had an astra gsi, would definitely NOT recommend that from your list. Reliability = 0

I would go for the civic, you can't beat Japanese for reliability.

Dunno if you have thought about it Jodie but what about a golf Gti pick them up for not much money and they are bomb proof wi good ride and are pretty quick.

Just an idea. I have a mk3 2ltr 8 valve and get a good 300-330 miles out a tank and its about £35 to fill.

insurance is cheap and so are parts if anything does go wrong. Labour is the cheapest cause its pretty easy and simple to work on.

What about something diesel... most do 600miles to a tank and you've got the RA for speed and fun. [:)]

My recommendation would be to go for something like a 306, 406, Xsara TD from the auctions and enjoy the economy on your way to and from work. They're actually reasonably comfy too, the 406 especially... plus, they are easy to work on and parts are dirt cheap.

Cheers,

Grant

A wouldn't knock diesel off your list, especially with todays ones as a tuned fabia vrs will easy keap up with the impreza through the gears. Some good dieles are the golf gtdi or the ibiza cupra diesel and both are reasonable prices now.

I would have to lead ya off all the above and say Golf GTI Mk2 me bro used to have one it got thrashed every day and had 230000 miles on the clock ans never gave any probs it wis not that expensive to run either but had heaps o torque Golf GTI the way to go [Y]

Yup, our 2nd car is a Leon Cupra TDi and it's pretty damn good for a TDi. Has bucket loads of torque and is pretty nippy and handles well too. RR'd at 166bhp when it was virtually new and chipping them can apparently get you over 200bhp with a healthy boost of torque too (although the wife tells me I'm still not allowed to touch her car :) )

Not quite as quick as the STi but considering you'll get 550-600+miles out of a tankful it's what I'd use for long journeys.

Picked up a MK3 golf gti 8v for my ex when she sold the scoob with only 60 thousand miles and just mot's and serviced for just over a grand so 3 would buy you a top 1.

If you can find a mint cav gsi then i would but they are rare now,the dreaded tin worm has eaten most or folk have nicked the engines to put in corsas and novas, travesty as they were crackin cars in their day,i miss mine [;)]

Hi MkII Golf GTi...no question. Next to the classic scoobie that I now own, it's been one of the best and most reliable cars i've ever had....I had mine for 7 years with no major failures to report. Good thing is that you'll pick up a belter for much less than 3K too!

Parts are easy to get, they are easy to work on, don't rot too bad and return a decent mpg when you don't cane them.

Good luck with the hunt.

Cheers.

A Starlet GT. I love it great fun to drive and fast and it is never returned less than 35mpg and mine is not exactly standard. I also think they are only group 8 insurance.

Very easy to get parts. Toyota main dealers suply them. Have a look on www.toyotagtturbo.com it is a very good forum with a lot of traders on so you can pick on some nice mods.
