Spaceman Posted March 1, 2007 Author Posted March 1, 2007 Na bugger it am going for it half nine sat morning grinder on hand for the heat shield. Take it you neeed to remove it to get to the bolts???? am startin at half nine as this give me plenty of time to try have it ready for monday nightshift lol
craig mac Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 The main issue you will encounter is getting decent/correct torque on a couple of the Bolts at the turbo from under the car. Be sure and soak them with wd or similar for a wee while too before you start, last thing you want to do is shear any of them.[:S] ps......Grinder not required[:|]
Spaceman Posted March 1, 2007 Author Posted March 1, 2007 Cheers Craig the car will be up on the ramps for the job you think the heat shield will come off ok what els do i need to remove? the turbo heat shield? Cheers Greig
james_mowbray Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 When I done mine I found major issues to be:- 1. The heat-sheild. time needed to find all the bolts, no grinder required 2. Getting leverage for lower bolts to the turbo 3. Theres a bracket halfway down the neck of the downpipe which was no where near a fixing point. (so it was grinded off) 4. Be prepaired, the system I bought had a gasket kit but the turbo to downpipe one was missing. I didnt think to check...[:$] 5. If the downpipes got 2 sensor holes, make sure youve got a plug for one. And probably the very best and most important advice I would give is make sure the turbos cold before you start. best of luck with it.. James
fai17 Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 The last thing you want is more hassle than it's worth so why bother doing it yourself(unless you are a mechanic).....it pays to get the pro to do the downpipe......where as a backbox swap is pi55 easy........downpipe is a different cup of tea. Don't do it Greig.
Spaceman Posted March 2, 2007 Author Posted March 2, 2007 Cheers jtm great info will the bottom bolts on the turbo be easier to reach as the car will be 6 foot in the air? also bout the turbo being cold is was thinkin the bolts might crack easier with a bit heat in them?? Peter thanks for advice fella and nope im no mechanic but old Dick that is lettin me use his barron is and the best one i know so he will be on hand to help me out he would be doing but is a bit older so ill tackle the physical side with him as my mentor cheers Greig any more useful info guys?
james_mowbray Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 If youve got the right tools it wont be a problem, if the turbos hot, youll do some serious self harming. To get the leverage to loosen the bottom bolts I used a rachet with three extention bars attached. If you wanted to you could start the car once youve removed the heat shield, if you felt it would aid in loosening the bolts, but it would mean having to reconnect the intercooler and then having to take it off again to redo the top bolts. IMO wouldnt be worth while. On the plus side its a great feeling of satisfaction when you start her up[] James
Spaceman Posted March 2, 2007 Author Posted March 2, 2007 JTm could you give me a more in depth guide as what to remove please bud? cheers i have a 2 foot and 3 foot extension bar. Dicks barron/ workshop also has more tools than a screwfix catalogue so hopefully all will be to hand cheers Greig
james_mowbray Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 First thing to do is a good spray of wd40 or suchlike to all nuts/bolts on the downpipe (and system if your replacing the whole thing) Next remove the intercooler Next stage is a pain remove the heat-shield Once all the heat shields off (comes out in bits)take out the 3 nuts to the top of the turbo/downpipe Car in the air and remove the lower 2 nuts- these ones were tricky proper tools will speed it up. Remove the lambda sensor the the fixings to the centre section The downpipe should slide back then down and out. Took me 3 hours in total at my first attempt, so expect the same sort of man hours. Dont forget to wrap your downpipe or youll end up having to take it off and doing it at a later stage. James
