Tesco 99 vs V-Power

Recommended Posts

I have always used Shells finest in my Subarus - Optimax and now V-power .

My car mapped for Optimax.

On Saturday I noticed for the first time that my local Tesco (Renfrew) had 99RON in their pumps , so I put £20 worth into my almost empty tank .

I liked the price - it was 89something compared to 91ish for V-P.

Performance-wise  I can't say I notice any difference (if anything it is pulling slightly stronger - but it has been a bit chilly)

MPG seems to be the same .

I didn't do a ECU reset - but my '00 should have 'learned' the new fuel in the first 50miles or so .

I think I'll try Tesco 99 again when I next fill up .

Is anyone else using Tesco 99 ?

Anyone any comments about '99 vs V-power ?

I have been using  Tesco 99 eversince the Cumbernauld branch got it in. I have noticed my car is running a bit more smooth with it, and on a recent trip to Inverness I got 348 miles out of a tank, and the petrol light hadn't even came on before I filled up again. I think it's fantastic stuff, and a great price too!

We've been running Tesco 99 for a few months now, ever since the Greenock Tesco got it. Cant say a've noticed any difference in power or fuel consumption tho.

Only good thing is it has saved me from having to go to Paisley once a week just to fill up! [;)]

i  tried it for the 1st time on friday and cant say i noticed much of a difference, i have to travel to ayr for the nearest  tesco that stocks it so that will put paid to me using it more often, ill be sticking to the v power at linwood on the way  to work. I also tried sainsburys super unleaded but that didnt make much  of a difference to  ordinary unleaded

I tried tescos finest last time I was down in glasgow, and I can say that I thought much of it like, The car didn;t really seem just quite as responsive as it does on v-p, so dont think I'll be using it again like unless I'm desperate...

just my tuppence worth...

Tried tesco once and the car didnt seem to like it much, to be fair i never gave i a chance with only the one fill up but i noticed that my mpg was terrible, wasnt gunning it so cant say too much regards the performance but rose thought it was running worse also................ also been plagued with CEL faults since but i think this is totally unrelated

Your experiance may vary but optimax for me

I have sent two samples to our fuel testing company to have the M/O/N tested on the v-power and 99 tesco to see what is the best . . r.o.n stands for retail octane number and m.o.n stands for motorsport octane number so m.o.n is what we are getting it tested for will let you know results

Nice-one Grant  [Y]

It'll be interesting to hear the results to find out just what we are putting into our cars .

(BTW . Roughly 98RON = 90MON ,100RON = 91.5MON )

I'm off shift from tonight till Sunday and I'll be filling up with Tesco '99 tomorrow , so I'll carry out some more 'testing' (ahem!) in the next few days and report back at the weekend.

Grant you need to work on your acronyms  !!

The difference between RON and MON rating is simply the test conditions, MON being tested at higher Air Temp and at higher RPM to find the Highest Usable Compression Ratio at which knock starts to occur. The rating is based on the ratio of two control fuels, the the knock rating defines the ratio of the control fuels at which knock would occur at the same Compression Ratio as the Fuel being tested. i.e id the tested fuel starts to knock at the same point at which the control fuel is mixed in a 90parts to 10parts ratio then this would be 90RON (or MON, depending on which test is being used)

RON = Research Octane Number

MON = Motor  Octane Number

Control Fuel = Iso-octane (2,2,4 trimethyl pentane) and n-Heptane
