turbohippy Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 After only owning my '93 wrx for just over a month, I was driving kome from the scrappy's with a bootfull of scooby bits I'd just got, I came to a roundabout, went round and put the power on to exit the roundabout when all of a sudden the steering went heavy and the charge light came on. No problem I thought, the belts brocken. So I got home, lifted the bonnet and the belts still there but slack and only half on the pulley? took the belt off and the pulley is wobbling around on the shaft? so I took the pulley off and the back of the pulley is worn away so much the keyway is gone. Then I looked at the sprocket and the same has happened to the sprocket and the crankshaft! The key has just eaten away the whole thing. I think that when the T.B. was last changed they lost the woodruff key and just used a mild steel one. Now the sprocket has pretty much welded itself to the crank but the keyway in the crank is a big gaping whole so if I did manage to take the sprocket off I'd never get another one to stay put. I've got another pulley and did think about drilling two holes in it and pinning it to the two holes in the sprocket but thats going to put all the pressure from all the belts on whats left of the key and if that slips bang goes engine! Anyone got any other ideas or is it simply save up for a new engine time... I dunno?
euan_r Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 just to clarify, is it just me or does the crank look a bitty short to fit a crank pulley too bearing in mind the timing cover has to go in between as well. the timing crank pulley will have to be replaced. is this posted in technical? surprised at lack of response. i would do a bodge to get the final life out of exisiting engine [:$]
johnnyr6 Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I had the exact same problem with my sti2. The crank bolt goes loose and the outer crank pulley starts to fall off mashing the pulley and the woodruff key at the same time. No need for a new engine though, all you have to do is remove the crank pulley, renew the woodruff key and fit a new outer crank pulley. You'll prob need to carefully file or grind the key so you can remove the pulley. I put alloy pulleys on mine and 2 years later i've had no probs at all with it, can't see any probs occuring with a new standard pulley aswell. Oh i may know of a standard pulley and new woodruff key going, pm me if your interested.
johnnyr6 Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Just had another look at the pic, i would replace that crank pulley aswell, shouldn't be too expensive from grade a or some other breaker.
euan_r Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 this also happened to me. i fited leightweight jobby. i just though the shaft looked a bit short for a pulley. but i canny quite remember.
