sandy_gray Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 I am just finalizing the last few details with greer sport in regards to my new engine so does any 1 have any ideas on which turbo i should go with.Greer are recommending the owen developments garret bb turbo which is a variation of the gt30 Oh its going on a modified 2.5 bottom end and im aiming for around the 450hp mark with scope to go 500hp
RA Dunk Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 depends whay your looking for tbh? you looking for quick spool up? or top end?
colin_ross Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Are you going to rotate it or leave it in the standard location. The turbo of the moment for those sort of figures seem the be the lateral md321. OD turbos are good too though, was having a good nosey at them yesterday.
WUZ Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 One of Marks MD321's will be perfect............................but it'll need to be the MD321T as the MD 321H will only make around 410hp. Best OE fitment turbo out there TBH ( I wonder what's going on mine?) Russell
sandy_gray Posted January 15, 2007 Author Posted January 15, 2007 Quote This one? lol thats ****ing huge
harvey_smith Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Are there many owners with MD321T turbos producing 450 bhp? Is 450 bhp the norm or the exception? I ask because I am involved with an owner who was promised 450 bhp and 480 ft lbs and is upset with his 427bhp/436 ft lbs.
colin_ross Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 As far as I'm aware the turbo has been proven capable but supporting mods obviously come into the equation too.
drb5 Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 The turbo sounds fairly new to comment too much on it. Not saying i know all about turbo's, but i hadn't heard anyone mention the 321T before a 3-4 months ago. Recently there have been a few turbo's that come with quoted figures and don't reach them.
sma01 Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 agreed with drb5, you want to go down the route of something that is tried and tested, there are a lot out there that quote the big power figures, but when it comes to actually achieving them they fall short of the mark... scott
fai17 Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Yes....even mines fell short of it's bhp rating..[:'(] Best would be to go for tried and tested ones.
wilky Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 This is the turbo I have on my car. http://www.owendevelopments.co.uk/products....asp?prodId=617 Owens said I would make at least 450 bhp @ 1.6 bar and it did just that. It showed 424 at dastek but I monged the geometry set up and she was lifting a wheel on the rollers, Gerry said that she had at least another 20bhp to show as my runs were inconclusive. You can telephone him to confirm this as he will remember the car. I never mapped over 1.6 bar with andy as the coilpacks started letting me down and I needed to get new ones, having closed my plug gaps down I turned the boost up to ensure I hit target boost on the rollers and ended up running her at 1.8 bar. I imagine Andy anticipated me doing this and ensured a safe map at the top, not ideal but safe. Plenty fuel, easy on the ignition advance. I like this turbo as it has an internal wastegate and a subaru style flange on the hot side housing, I rotated it towards the inner wing but it will sit in the normal position no problem. Lateral performance do a similar spec turbo, I spoke to Mark at lateral and Lee at Owens at great length, they were both identical in thier advice and help which made the decision harder. I chose Owens simply because they were recommended to me by someone who has worked on Gp B rally cars and swears by them, and also they were recommended by Prodrive, both officially and unofficially and that swayed my decision. I telephoned Mark and thanked him anyway as he was one of the most helpful guys ive ever delt with. I see a bar of boost by 3800 and by 4000rpm its "hold onto your hat" time, its absolutley ferotious. This is good on a prodrive s2 gearbox on 4.4441 diffs as I never dip below 4000 rpm on gearchanges, but on a car who will, I would recommend the smaller exhaust housing turbo to ensure lower down spool up. My final word is this, any company that can make a garret hybrid turbo with its own exhaust housing castings to fit a subaru uppipe, and which with an internal wastegate that can deal with 2bar of boost without so much as a flutter, gets my vote anyday. Just look at the torque climb!! Sorry about the crap photo, this is the best of my inconclusive runs. Callum W
sandy_gray Posted January 18, 2007 Author Posted January 18, 2007 Brilliant thats the turbo greer was planning on fitting to my car[]
st3ph3n Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 S4NDY - Greers are responsible for the unadultarated awesomeness that is Wilkys car. When it exits the Hairpin at knockhill you can hear the turbo spooling all the way from the pits.

harvey_smith Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Quote As far as I'm aware the turbo has been proven capable but supporting mods obviously come into the equation too. The car in question has had everything done to it, everything that you would reasonably expect for that sort of power output. The owner has spent thousands and having been promised 450/480 and having 427/436 he is understandably miffed. Hence my question. A couple of people have spoken highly of Owen's to me and I am looking at one of their turbos now.
fai17 Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Harvey...keep us posted on how you get on with Owens number
