ScoobySounds Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Hi there! Last week something happened to my scoob that got meall in a knot. I was out driving the car in afternoon pretty hard, even trying some 0-60's etc and the car was driving really well, and when I gothome I let it idle for 5 mins or so, as I’ve been told to do. then in the evening when I was in convoy with anothercar going slow, I was suspicious that the turbo wasn’t kicking in. and keptsquirting, to test it, and I’m sure it wasn’t kicking in. then on the drivehome, I was definite it wasn’t kicking in. I couldn’t sleep that night worrying about it, but gotup the next morning warmed her up and she turboed once more, as if nothing waswrong. Has this ever happened to anyone? Its happened one other time also, but thats it. I love my scoob, but none too the technical wizard –so go easy on me – I could just about find the turbo when I looked under thebonnet, so that’s what your dealing with here [8-)]
the squiggle Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Main culprit is usually the Boost Control Solenoid on the drivers inner wing, give it a good clean out with brake cleaner Another possible is a split hose or sticky Dump Valve being stuck in the open position Where are you located?
ScoobySounds Posted December 29, 2006 Author Posted December 29, 2006 thanks sqirrel i'm in the centre of edinburgh
irish al Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Ive got the same problem, the car limits its self to 0.5 bar of boost and it "feels" like the turbo isnt working. It only ever happens when the car is warm after a good run, then I sit ideling for a while, then take off again. I mean hard driving, sitting then hard driving. After I take off it limits itself. Normal driving where strating and stopping is never a problem. I was told it was possibly heat soak that wqs the problem. Ill have to get the boost soloniod looked at. Al
ScoobySounds Posted December 29, 2006 Author Posted December 29, 2006 that sounds about the same as me I think Al. V strange. a split pipe sounds like that would cause a consistent, and deteriorating problem. A sticky-something, or dirty-something sounds more like what this is. why do you ask where I am? you wanna come sort it for me? [] anybody else could probably fix it in the time it would take me to recognise a boost solenoid after it falls from the sky and hits me on the head. when I open the bonnet, it looks full[:|]
harvey_smith Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Depending on the M/Y of your car and Al's, it may well be that when you are giving it large, the ECU is detecting something it does not like (DET) and is pulling ignition which makes the car feel flat. In time, providing there is no excessive boost or more DET it will go back to its "normal" setting. Al, try an ECU reset and see if you then have full /normal boost. do not give it full throttle immediately but see just how much boost you have gradually. There is no need to leave the car ticking over after a hard drive, just drive the last couple of miles or three minutes normally, and off boost and switch off like any other car. On start up, drive off normally staying off boost. Letting the car sit ticking over from cold is neither necessary or desirable. Remember that although the water temperature can show normal in a mile it may be 6-10 miles before the oil is at normal working temperature. Booting the car cold is a BAD thing as is booting it after a period sat ticking over because the heat soak can result in DET which is also a BAD thing. Give it half a mile for the intercooler to pull temperatures down and remember that at 30mph there is not a lot of flow to the intercooler.
st3ph3n Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 It's quite incredible how quickly the inter warmer heats up the intake temps. I have my R-VIT set to display that usually and it doesn't take long sat at a set of traffic lights before the temp can double itself.
