TSL 333 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 As the post above suggests. When I use my Pug 205 GTI, I go as follows: Main straight, up to and including 4th gear Brake and down to third for first right hand corner. Stay in third gear until I reach the back straight, when I pop it into 4th again, then braking, third, second for the hairpin and back onto the main straight, 2nd, 3rd and up to 4th and back to where i started. i.e. 6 changes (I think!!!) What would I be doing in my Subaru? STi8 with 6 speed box (and 330 bhp!!!)
johns Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 You'll be in 2nd gear coming out of the hairpin, and you would need 5th by the end of the main straight for a short while before braking for Duffus (or whatever it is called at the moment). If wet, you'll probably be in 3rd, in the dry, you may be able to get away with 4th. Most likely 3rd for the right hander at McIntyres and up to the chicane you might need 4th. Chicane itself will be 3rd of 4th depending on the entry line and speed, and it will be 4th along the straight to Clarks. Might be OK keeping in 4th for Clarks, but will again depend on cornering speed - may just need 3rd, and you should be in 5th by the end of he back straight before braking for the hairpin. However, a lot of it will depend on your tyres and the available grip for cornering speeds. It may be possible to do much of the track in 4th by itself, depending on your torque levels at lower revs. John
Gumball Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 from doing it myself i always found that if your in second gear at the bends your going to neeed to be ready for the car wanting to slide and snake out the bend especially at the hairpin. 3rd would give you a slower time but be a lot smoother. I dont think it ever made 6th gear on the straight
z1000 Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 My car sounds about the same and what John S says sounds spot on.
TSL 333 Posted October 6, 2006 Author Posted October 6, 2006 Cheers guys - I have always fancied taking the Scoob on but generally always just use my Pug on Hot Hatch days. Do you guys bother with track insurance for the SIDC trackdays?
Gumball Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 take a roll of black nasty (black tape) for your number plate that way if you come off the rails you take your car out then call the RAC or such like and say it happened on the road
z1000 Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Only done a couple and not bothered with insurance as everyone drives within there limits usually (not like hot hatch days) so as long as you don't go mad and keep reminding urself you've got to drive it home you'll be fine.
johnnyr6 Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Same for me, although i don't need 5th at all. Some type r's and ra's will use 3rd for the hairpin due to shorter gearing and be grabbing 5th before the bridge on the straight. Another thing, aim for the lights on the bridge when exiting the hairpin it'll give you a staight line over the straight.??
