guys, iv been having a problem for a while with the cars accelaration, when i put the foot down, its seems to hold back a bit, does it alot worse when its cold,  a mate said it could be the o2 senor thats causing the problem, been getting worse over the last few days, doesnt do it as much once the cars at normal running temp,  it a 1993 wrx import aswell, anybody got any ideas, or would the o2 sensor cause this problem?

It could do. If the maf is away the car could be pulling ignition out to try and stop it detting.  If you reset the ecu (disconnect the battery for a few hours) it should flash the CEL when restarted if its gubbed. You could also swap it with a mates and see if that helps.

I wouldn't thrash the car, cold or hot, till you get to the bottom of it.

Could be a lot of things then, best to start with the simple stuff like plugs and coil packs.

Can you be more specific about "holding back", are we talking about a sudden loss of power, slightly down on power, misfires etc?

got the spark plugs changed on thursday, coil packs where checked n they were ok. feels a bit like kangaroo petrol, would be the best way to describe it,  start to accelarate, n its kindy jumpy, then starts to accelarate, quite slow on accelarating aswell, does it really bad when cold, not as bad when hot.

Possibly a weak heater on the O2 sensor

Voltage from the sensor should flutuate between 0.1volts and 0.7volts on idle and light throttle.  If the heater circuit is faulty then it would dramtically overfuel causing the spluttering.

When the sensor gets heat into it the overfuelling will calm down and the spluttering will calm down but not go away as the car is still overfuelling.

Fit another sensor and reset the ECU

ok, ive had it put on the computer, no fault codes found, was advised to disconnect the battery over nite, then  2moro give it a good thrash to let the ecu learn the boost thingy again. will let u`s know wot happens 2moro.

The absolute last thing I'd do is thrash it. With an unknown fault you realy are playing with fire.

ok, mayb not thrash it, but he said something about letting the ecu learn the boost curves again, or something, was also told about the boost, its only hitting 0.6, where it should be 0.8, he cleaned out the boost pipes aswell so c if it could be that,

ok guys, the latest on this problem it looks like it was caused by a water leak in the expansion bottle, the water was dripped off the bottom of the expansion bottle onto the the wire part of the coil pack, which was then running down the wires n onto the coil pack, water must of been getting into the coil pack, and with the combined problem of a small hole in the intercooler pipe which connects to the turbo. put a new expansion bottle on to stop the leak, n also temporarly sealed the hole on the intercooler pipe aswell, car is now running alot better, with no hesitation now, boost still a bit slow to come in, but now boosting more like it should be, just need to get the radiator changed now.
