Auldy Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 Between a Wastegate and a Blow Off Valve(dump valve)??????????????
st3ph3n Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 One is on the exhuast side one is on the intake side. A wastegate diverts some of the exhuast gasses away from the turbo. When your turbo reaches say 1 bar of boost and you're still accelerating then the wastegate is openned so that some of the exhuast gasses can be diverted away from the turbo so that the boost pressure is stabilised at the correct pressure. BOV/DV is another valve. When you close the throttle the pressurised air in the turbo has no where to go, so the BOV is openned and the contents of it are either venteded to the atmosphere (Tschhhhhh noise) or recirculated into another part of the intake system. That help?

Auldy Posted September 16, 2006 Author Posted September 16, 2006 Cheers mate [Y] so aswell as fitting an aftrmarket dumpvalve, can an aftermarket wastegate b fitted? will it make much difrence?
st3ph3n Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 There is also two types of Wastegate - internal and external. An Internal wastegate is part of the turbine housing and the diverted gasses enter the downpipe of the exhuast like the gasses that have also made a trip round the turbo. An external wastegate has a second pipe (AKA the screamer pipe) generally where the gasses exit. Like having a second exhuast pipe if you will. You can't "fit" a different kind of wastegate as standard as it is part of the turbine housing, so you'd have to move to a turbo so large that it required an external wastegate. You can fit an external boost controller though which would modify when the wastegate openned so that you could run higher boost.
RS Grant Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 AFAIK, you cant fit a different wastegate to the same Turbo... an external wastegate can only come with an upgraded turbo, which (if suited and mapped to your car) will give large gains. A screamer pipe makes an absolutely amazing sound, had one on the TD06/Tial Ext. Wastegate on my ST205 and it was something else.. effectively giving you an extra inch of exhaust once its opened up... however, when closed lower in the rev range, backpressure is increased to improve low-down grunt.
