corsa Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Is this a wise idea ? My rear wheels are covered in lots of brake-dust (the front ones aren't as bad). I was wondering if this would be safe to do without leaving loads of scratches on the wheels. I once used a Brillo pad on my Firestorm exhaust tailpipe and it worked really really well and didn't do any damage whatsoever, just curious in case alloy wheels are made from a softer metal; or whatever; than the tailpipe was and it may cause them so damage? Anyone ever tried this before ? I have given it a go with a toothbrush but the dust seems to tough to come off with this method. Davie
golfdaft Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Try wonder wheels.... Available from Halfords etc.... Just ensure your wheels are suitable before using.... i.e read the instructions!! Workes great..... but don't use it all the time.... Enjoy
Anonymous Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 You need Brake Dust Shields mate and one of those electric toothbrushes. Cannot go wrong there.
andy Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 I wouldn't put a brillo pad anywhere near my wheels - and they're just the bog standard ones that came with the car! Wonder Wheels works for me. Sometimes takes a few applications to get the really stubborn crap off, but it does the job. I use it every couple of months and once every six months take the wheels off and do them properly. Strange you say the BACK wheels. My back wheels are never, ever bad and any brake dust on them usually comes off no bother. It's the front ones that are a pain to do.
dipsy Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Try Meguirs hot wheels and a pressure washer when cold .Thats what i use and the alloys come up looking new .I use it on a newage sti gold alloys and use it all the time and i give them a coat of polish aswell
craig mac Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Davie Are you drunk? PMSL[*-)] Alloy is soft as sheet, Exhaust made of Stl/Steel and hard as foook Buy some alloy wheel cleaner from Halfrauds, spray let soak and a wee brush to get in to the hard to reach bits rinse well Buy a decent Alloy wax and wash them more often with just soap and water once you wax them You will rip them to bits with a Brillo pad man[*-)] Craig Also drunk but in control (ish)
z1000 Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Deffo with the wonder wheels beforeanything as extreme as a brillo pad just don't do it on hot wheels (after a drive) or leave it on for too long.
darryl_martin Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Use the wonder wheels myself, occasionally!!!. Try not to get it on the calipers, it takes the paint off of mine(careful on the brembo's). Shifts brake dust and stuff on the wheels well tho. I've heard that it is quite harsh so don't use it regularly, normally just soap and water. I would try something different, probably meguairs, but I'm still working through a 5 litre tub of the stuff I bought a few years back! For the exhaust try some Autosol. Good stuff[Y]
