Guest Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 in the next few months i should finally getting a decent pay rise so im finally looking for a scoob now that im 23 and insurance is more reasonable. want a classic shape only im in a dilema between a few different types possibly a P1 like the 3 door style and that much rarer or a v6 sti type-r v-limited (heard they are prone to detination more than others even with a remap etc??) or a 5dr sti v6 handy with 5 doors according to the mrs!!! or do i be sensible and buy a bogo uk turbo to begin with and spend a bit less of my budget? at my age insurance would matter but iv checked various brokers and within £1500 being the highest for any of the above so im willing to pay that the car i would buy has to be used daily or well 3 weeks out of 5 when im at home. 2 have my mates have just bought evo's a 7gsr 320bhp ish and a mate with an evo8 fq330 me being a young lad means i want a car that can at least compete on a track of course with my 2 mates. look forward to everyone's opinion cheeeeers
RS Grant Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Drive a few cars mate... If I had decided to spend that much then I was seriously tempted to go for a Bug STi with the stronger 6-sp box and bottom end... However, I went for the 'sensible' late Classic UK Turbo option. [] If I was you, I'd buy a V5 Type-R with a rebuild.. then spend the 2-3k change convincing your Missus that 2drs are waaaaay more practical than 5drs. [] Cheers, Grant
paddy247 Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Aight Ciaran Better to start with a fast car, get your self a good classic sti, saying that there a few uk turbos here that you dont want to mess with, Always a good idea to buy a v limited also as they hold there money. If a uk car is a consideration then a P1 is a good choice but pricey, the sti is probaly better value for money. Have you considered an RB5, A good future classic I think
martyn_slorach Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Hello Ciaran, If you are interested in an RB5, check out the rb5oc.co.uk forum, there's always a few really good examples for sale and prices are low just now. Martyn
p1ggm Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 i can maybe get you a nice bug eye sti for about that 380 ish bhp
flat4phil Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Ciaran, if you want the best available Impreza models around with £1000's spent on them - then keep your focus on the for sale section. Never seen so many ace examples of classics and new age being sold for insultingly low prices. Go outside the forum and the real world catches you up and will not get the same quality or quantity. I know of a Type R in white with all the usual good history, condition, etc., and the dealer wants £10k - been on his books for several months now. P1's are great but at a price - so stick with what ever floats your boat age wise. Great new age cars coming up on the forum every week all cherished. You can do loads styling wise with the 'blob' eyed front end too if that worries you.
Guest Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 rather like the idea of a 3 door as they are considerably rarer than 5 doors. and grant like the idea about keeping the mrs sweet with any change i might have. paddy as for some uk turbs on here well thruthfully can't be arsed with the hassle of making a medium car faster with ££££ of parts to make it sti fast, i would rather just an sti or the like save faffin about plus an sti is designed for the power as it's factory speced like that a decent P1 is probs out my budget and as for RB5's yes had crossed my mind but their also pretty pricey considering it's a uk turbo with better appolstry (spelling) fancy paint a few stickers and a ????/1000 no tag!!!! and im sure their is a few other subtle differences but don't bother!! keep the ideas coming and the reason i want a classic is bug eyes look srhit and a decent sti8 is to expensive and common sorry gordon!!! any mods on your car yet grant??
johnnyr6 Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 If it's a classic you want get a v5 or 6 type r. If you get it checked out and remapped (if not already) for uk fuel it will be reliable. Even in standard form they are very quick (my m8's standard v5 did a 12.9sec qtr) and come with lots of toys, i.e intercooler water spray, and more importantly dccd. On the insurance side of thing the type r, although not that more expensive that a sti to insure it is a bit more tricky to find companys that cover it (a few dont have it listed). Try a-plan insurance, very cheap.
Guest Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 already checked out insurance greelight came through with £1100 wish aint bad that fully comp my name with an exhaust suspension and wheels declatred just to give a rough idea
Gumball Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 buy a 95 or 96 sti ra stick the rest of the money in the bank for mods. nice
RS Grant Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 any mods on your car yet grant?? Nothing yet, just keeping it standard... although I might be going for a CD Player sometimes in the future. [][] Cheers, Grant
Ross9 Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 At the risk of being biased, I'd say go with a 2 door Type R, got to say I love mine, I've driven a lot of different performance cars and got to say the type R is one of the nicest cars to own and drive I've come across but a change of other priorities mean I need a diesel runaround instead , it's for sale in the for sale section. A bit older than your looking at there, however it has full history and a genuine 42500 miles on it, jap history as well, unmolested and made 291 bhp with just the blitz exhaust. Timing belt service carried out 4 months ago, just had oil and filter last week etc etc, imo a stunning example and it's not driven hard etc, part of why I'm selling it is because I don't need a car capable of as much when I never use it. Bit of an ad, but I guarantee if you view this you will take it. and it's under your budget as well. Ross
Carl Davey Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Get the Type R out of your system while you're young... ...then get the RA. [] That said i personally wouldn't go out and spend 12k on one. Seans black V4 Type R (see for sale) just sold recently for a lot less than that and IMO was a stunner of a car. As has been said there's plenty of great cars out there practiaclly being given away. If you're going to spend mega-bucks find something that has already had the big-money taken out of it, i.e. AP's, de-cat, nice ECU etc because you WILL mod it. [] [H]

Guest Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 carl ur right i will mod it looked at ra's just but just can't resist that 3 door exclusivity [] as for mods i would realy like a nearly standard car low miles as possible then i know what has been done and thats it's been done properly!! grant u don't drive standard cars we all know that look at the viking started out as a run around and now look at it [] i understand i could get a good v3 or 4 for cheap but thing at has to at least be a v5 or 6
andrew_lally Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 late classic STi mate.....best engine and box they ever made......version 5 supposedly the best!!!! RA very short geared though.....i reckon you would get tired of it too quick!!! regards andy
Guest Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 i will see have to drive a few or even a spin in one would prob give me an idea. was in an ra a while back in aberdeen guy called ken who is on here flippin mental the way that thing went. will have to watch when the time comes be a fair different to the current vr6 [8-)] although fuel bill is probably quite similar
C3SSE Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 I would say join your friends in Evo ownership and grap youself a VII. If it has to be an Impreza a V3/V4 Sti type-r.
Carl Davey Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 As above the smart money is on a V3 STi to be honest Ciaran. It has the most agressive valve train and doesn't come with an engine notorious for failure. Go V4 if you want the nice dashboard etc - i did hence how i ended up with mine. I doubt any Impreza you buy will be as quick all round as the FQ320. My standard V4 STi made over 300bhp at the RR Day in Ellon last month, a V3 with only a de-cat and filter made over 330bhp IIRC. No other classics could touch Kevins Version 3 on a mods per power basis that day as far as i can remember. The V5/6 undoubtedly looks nicer which is why i said to get it out of your system, if you want the best chance of keeping up with your mates get a V4 Type R. It still has the three door looks but has more of the pedigree to help you keep up with the Evo. Grantyboy up here in Aberdeen was selling a nice one not long ago, unfortunately you just missed Seans (the car i would've bought had i not decided to go RA). You may live to regret buying standard when you add up what the mods have cost you! []
Guest Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 ok boys advice taken onboard will have a look at v3's and 4's can always add that more modern bits i like if need be as id rather have a car which won't blow up carl as i said buying standard is so i know whats done im willing to spend the bucks on mods rather than on beer for a change. may have to give up chasing my mates 7 as i spoke to him recently and he has big plans like 400bhp big plans so no chance!!!
