briforbes Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I'm supposed to be taking the little lady to see something at the festival on Wednesday evening, but despite coming from Edinburgh, I haven't got a clue what to see. Was thinking a comedy would be good, and a venue that's not absolutely baking hot - any suggestions? Cheers, Brian.
RA Dunk Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 pizza hut then the pub?? , only joking i hear the military tattoo at the castle is supposed to be good , is this not on at the same time?
st3ph3n Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Top Gun. It's on at C on Chamber Street at 5pm. Only £8.50 to get in and if you like top gun the movie you'll love it. Other than that go and see Rich Hall or Frankie Boyle. Both excellent.
st3ph3n Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 The tattoo is booked solid from about February. Not a good chance of getting in to that.
oobster Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Went to see Frankie Boyle last year and he was no bad. Haven't seen Rich Hall yet, but hopefully going to see him tonight - we won tickets on the BBC website to go see a show hosted by Dara O'Brian. Do a search for the assembly rooms - lots of comedy acts on there. Jimmy Carr might be worth a shout if he's up here this year, also Tim Vine was excellent last year. Jim Bowen from Bullseye did a show last year too that had me in hysterics.
Gumball Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 http://www.edfringe.com I went to see "Black Watch" on Friday. Its a story about the views and opinions of the soldiers in the Black Watch in Iraq and how the regiment took 300 years to get to today and 3 years to destroy it. Its hard hitting, funny, black humour and appeals to an audience from right across the board. The place was full of guys with their birds and everyone loved it The acting is fantastic !!
andy Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Went out and about last Thursday night. Ended up at the Pleasance - about 20 different shows on at any one time. We went to see The Comedy Zone, but it wasn't that good tbh and they threatened to kick us out for heckling. I mean what's that all about? It's not MY fault the guy looked like Screech from Saved By The Bell [] There is however plenty going on up there and loads to choose from.
st3ph3n Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 If you go to the pleasance at lunch time you cna have lunch with Neil and Christine Hamilton. Hecking isn't just allowed, it is the law!
peter_macgowan Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 I usually go see Danny Bhoy. Ive seen him 5 years running and he is really funny. I might go see Top gun on Stephen's recommendation. [] Better be good[]
st3ph3n Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 It really is. I went with another 5 people from work and we all loved it. Saw Danny Bhoy last year. He was very good indeed.
oobster Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Went to see that Radio 2 show with Dara O'Brian last night - was very good. He is doing this same show every Monday night apparently, it was only last night Radio 2 were there recording it. Show was supposed to start at 9pm though, didnt actually start till 9.30. It was due to finish at 10pm and didn't end until 10.45, so that's not so bad. There was Adam Hills (Australian), Ed Byrne (he was rubbish), Rich Hall (American - he was good) and some guy from Wales (didn't catch his name but he was excellent).
willie Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Adam Hills is very good Also saw a black comedy called Talk Radio Good safe shows like Fred Mccauley are a laugh Jim Hensons Puppets is good but v expensive at £18 - for those who dont know it is an adult version of the Muppets
st3ph3n Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 A wee recommendation from me. Go to the Pleasance Dome for some food. Go to momma cherri's soul food cafe which is open during the festival. The ribs are outstanding. Infact, everything is.
peter_macgowan Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Heading tomorrow going to see Top Gun and Stephen K Amos
oobster Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Just booked tickets to go see Rhod Gilbert on Sunday night - will let the original poster know if he was good/bad
briforbes Posted August 18, 2006 Author Posted August 18, 2006 Thanks for the info guys, it's much appreciated.......unfortunately the girlfriend has decided in her infinite wisdom that we should split up, so not feeling too "Festivaly" at the moment. No sympathy required, I'm big enough and ugly enough to take these things on the chin.
bigbadboab Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Quote The tattoo is booked solid from about February. Not a good chance of getting in to that. I get in for free EVERY night

I hate being on the Tattoo as I miss things like Chris went to see. That sounds as if it was very good, and as you say 300 years of history destroyed in 3. Fecking penny-pinching Politicians. Cost me a few thousand pounds for my retirement fund with the mergers.
