craigwrx Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 With some good advice from GUMBALL i have added the laser pro park to my shopping list, in addition to this i have also been looking at either (A) Origin B2 © Road Angel.I do have the smartnav fitted, but apparently the safety camera database, which you can use for an additional £120 per year, is not very good ...(and bloody expensive) It does appear that the Origin comes out on top ? However it is noted that installation is more difficult than the plug and play Road Angel. My preference is the Origin B2, but not if i have got to pay out more money for an engineer to fit it. So my question is, does anybody here know how difficult it is to fit the Origin B2 ? ...taking into account, my knowledge on electrical issue's is crap. CheersCraig
wrxmania Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Origin B2 is the best, very discrete and takes 5 minutes to put it. Easy. Mount it down beside the cigarette lighter, it has a wiring harness - plug it into the cigarette lighter, run the GPS ariel somewhere under the trim/carpet whatever, plug in any extra's (laser alert etc) - is is really straight forward. You can take the Origin out of the car - its slightly bigger than a credit card - but it leaves all the mount, the wiring etc in place. You can get it hardwired (easily) into cigarrette lighter if you don't want to plug it in but I had mine for 2 1/2 years - it was great, £50 subscription updated with all the cabling and software that comes with it (on a PC) and it never misses a trick. Road Angel is great, but look really big and clumsy beside a proper Origin B2 install. I sold mine 2 weeks ago to Little H down South - but apparently Halfords are doing them for around £200 - there can be no bigger Bargain - I paid £430 for mine. Well worth the money - can't recommend it enough. I am suer it will also control a garage door opener too [] Brian []

Craig - a monkey could install it - its' so easy and NO electrical knowledge needed - it is plug and play.
st3ph3n Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Craig, your WRX has the newer interior as it's an 05 spec car so you'll not want to have it plugged into the cigarette lighter socket all the time as it's very untidy. Luckily for you I know my way round the electrics and it's not a difficult task to hardwire it into the back and reasonably tidily run the cabling.
wrxmania Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 That's what you want then - GET AN ORIGIN B2. I'll buy another when I get back into licence losing territory!
craigwrx Posted August 12, 2006 Author Posted August 12, 2006 Thanks for the infomation Guys [Y] st3ph3n ..will pick ur brains further after i have purchased the unit ....thanks Cheers Craig
jimser Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 craig halfords have none of these round my way (paisley, braehead)and are saying it now obsolete stock!you can buy them direct on the net for £273[] jim
st3ph3n Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Nae probs craig. Getting into the back of the ciggy socket is easy on our cars. Couple of blade connectors and some creative wire routing and you're away. The laser pro park might be a different story though.
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 I have one of these less bulky units which are mountable below the analogue speedo on the steering column. They are spot on and the screen slides off to keep out of sight http://www.naonline.co.uk/gps/micro-roadpilot.php CGS
david_taylor Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 With some good advice from GUMBALL i have added the laser pro park to my shopping list, in addition to this i have also been looking at either (A) Origin B2 © Road Angel. What about B? Ha ha! I purchased a Road Angel Plus today to replace the crappy laser detector I had bought for £70 from ebay. All it detected was traffic lights and automatic doors! Very impressed so far, although still to come across a mobile site to really test it. It good that you can actually get a proper speed to. My speedo is slightly higher than my actual speed, but thats always the norm.

My speedo is slightly higher than my actual speed, but thats always the norm. Problem is, if it's laser at a site that's not already in it's database to forewarn you of approach, by the time the Angel detects the laser, you're already done and it's another £60 in the Scamerati's pockets and three nice shiny new points on your licence. [] Spotted this on another forum. Dunno if it's true, but it's amusing anyway: Two members of the traffic police were out on a coastal road with a radar gun recently, happily engaged in apprehending speeding motorists, when their equipment suddenly locked-up completely with an unexpected reading of well over 400 mph. The mystery was explained seconds later as a low flying Tornado hurtled over their heads. The boys in blue, upset at the damage to their radar gun, put in a complaint to the RAF, but were somewhat chastened when the RAF pointed out that the damage might well have been more severe. The Tornado's target-seeking threat system had locked on to the 'enemy' radar and triggered an automatic retaliatory air-to-surface missile attack. (Un)Luckily, the Tornado was operating unarmed.
david_taylor Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 I have always thought that all these detectors would only pick up the mobile guns when its to late. However, my friend swares he has been saved on at least 5 occations by the Angel. Hopefully I do not prove him wrong!
st3ph3n Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Unless you get a bounced laser signal from the car ahead you're done. If the laser alert beeps then generally it's just letting you know they've hit you and they already have a reading. If you're speeding you'll not have time to do anything about it. But knowing where they might be, and where the fixed spots are is the real battle.
andy Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Even then, if you are detected, you have to PROVE that it was a bounced signal or that there were posssible problems with the detection equipment. That is virtually impossible. I've never been done for speeding, but am a paid-up member of PePiPoo purely because I'm sick of drivers being milked as a cash cow revenue generator for these so-called "Safety Camera Partnerships" Despite the gay sounding name it is an awesome resource for drivers done by Scameras. Check out the forums for a wealth of knowledge.
