overheating problem

ok  guys, more advice needed for a mates scoob, its a 93 wrx import, its overheating when sitting idling, temp goes back down a bit when driving it, hes just had the thermostat done thinking that was the problem but its still overheating, top radiator hose is hot but the bottom hose stays cold, when u take the expansion bottle cap off after driving it the water in the expansion bottle is bubbling. and alot of steam coming from the car.  any ideas on the problem? also the engine is rocking quite a bit in the engine bay, the garage he took it to says its cos its firing on three cylinders, would this be right? i thot it might just be the engine mounts, but garage said it wasnt.

thats wot i thot aswell, but surly that wont be the problem if the garage has done it correctly. think the guy at the garage said it might be some kind of problem with the cylinder head.

........or blockage in the bottom of the coolant system.

Does sound like the coolant is not moving round the system

A misfire on one cylinder will make the engine rock strangely

saying that, u know the small water pipe that goes from the top off the radiator to the expansion bottle, the water doesnt run consently thru that pipe, which i found strange, it kindy spits n spurts thru the pipe, if u know wot i mean.

maybe worth checking the oil filler cap to see if it's showing ' carmeled  coloured oil '= cylinder head gasket gubbed.

could be your mates radiator has collapsed inside and blocked if 'top hose is hot and bottom hose is cold'

or as doug says could be as simple as an air lock.(make sure you refill with the heater in the 'HOT' POSITION.

yeah checked the oil filler cap, its fine, but a horrible smell comes from it, also a horrible smell comes out from the expansion bottle aswell when u take the cap off.

maybe worth taking off the top rad hose and the bottom one off then run some water via a hose through the radiator to elliminate the radiator.

had one in at work before with similar problem, turned out rad was partialy blocked, tried flushing through with pressure washer and all looked ok but still overheated, fired in new rad then no probs.may not be same prob with you though if engine has got a missfire.

Mine ran like a badger on mushrooms until I replaced the plugs.

There is a proceedure to clear an air lock but I'd get it wrong if I tried to explain.

Someone will post it.

bit off the thread sorry fuzzy, but dougster how does a badger on mushrooms run , never heard that saying before

let alone seen a badger on mushrooms, would be entertaining watching a badger on mushrooms when you were on mushrooms yourself though

i know hee haw about airlocks sorry fuzzy

I would say it could be the head gaskets gone mate - I had the same problem just under a year ago [;)], after I took the car out for a run the coolant would be bubbling away in the expansion tank - these bubbles were hydro carbon gases escaping from the head gasket. Are you losing coolant or is it coming out of the expansion tank after a run?

When the heads went on mine I also checked the oil and it was always fine the whole time!!! so be warned checking the oil is not always the best way to check that the heads have gone.

Fingers crossed it's not this mate.

mine did this a few months back, in the end it was just a leak from the rad plastic end cap. the water level in the expansion tank did not drop untill i squeezed the top rad pipe. then it would drop to show the real water level. are you sure its not just loosing water?

Try squeezing the top rad hose, if you get some nice gargling noises and some bubbles then it would look like a similar problem to mine. new rad was my fix and only £100 notes so noe the end of the world.

As for it being the head gasket is there not some funky machine that looks for gas contaminants in the coolant to confirm gasket bother?

best of luck.

right, the  guy took the car to another garage, this guy said the car aint misfiring,  as for the overheating problem, ma mate cant remember the name of it  but says the water was pi$$in out the top of the engine, under the inlet manifold somewhere! wots under the manifold that the water would pi$$ out from?

theres a main water pipe that feeds the circulating water from one head to the other mate...may just be a burst pipe!!

gonna be tricky to get in for a look though!!

may be easier taking manifold off !!.. 8 bolts just below the injector rails will take this off but still loads o pipes holding it on

have fun fuzzy lol
