scoobyjim Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 im looking to buy a classic impreza turbo and have seen a really nice one with full history etc and just had new cambelt but its on 84k. would i just be buying something thats going to need a rebuild soon or do these engines last long if well looked after?? cheers.
McGoo Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 I guess alot has to do with how the car has been looked after. FSH should give you some level of assurance but I would recommend that you get a warranty of sorts. I replaced the engine on my MY95 WRX at 186,000Kms coz the big ends went. Probably in part to me neglecting to appreciate the Oil change frequency required by an engine with this level of mileage ( kilometres ). But up to that point it was running superb, no major problems really to report. I guess it will also depend on what if any Mods have been done, how well they´ve been done and how compatible they are with any other mods. There are many guys on here with far more technical knowledge than me so I´ll leave them to explain the ins and outs properly.
Ali Mowat Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 I have just bought my UK wagon 2 months ago with 99,000 on the clock! It now has 103k but has fsh and seems to be sweet as and has been well looked after. Hopefully it will last for a fair bit yet! I was speaking to euan r at ellon on sat and his has 134k and still made a decent power - around about 230hp iirc and sounded sweet. Just use the maillage as a bargining point and get the price down.
neilswrx Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 agree with the above, mine is sitting on 102,000 no major probs so far
thewelsho Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 How about you buy it and this as back up! Dunno the year of your car, so I might be off the mark, might be worth a look though. John
david_taylor Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Mine is sitting at 85000 miles. Saying nothing else incase I tempt fate! As long as its had regular services, particularly oil changes and you have the FSH. It should be fine. Subaru told me anything after a 1999 is reliable as as long as its had regular services. They were prone to knocking and pistons going prior to that if they were not looked after apparently. Suppose its a chance you take. I personnally would only buy a car with that milage from a reputal dealer. And try your best to get a years warranty. Least then you if a piston goes or bottom end it should not be your pocket it comes out off!
euan_r Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 mines 135k but you got to like getting your hands dirty. All depends on price. at 80K i would have no hesitation myself as long as you test it out fully. and at least its got history [].
wrxmania Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Get a good history, a good feel for it AND a good inspection with a SUPERB warranty and you'll be fine. They are reliable JAPANESE cars after all - built to take quite a bit of stick. Brian []
