Engine not running properly

About a week ago i filled my subaru up with just plain unleaded instead of optimax because ther was no optimax at the pumps. the car ran fine untill the normall unleaded got in the system and engine started splutterin n' backfiring. now the engine dies and speeds up on idle, dies when puttin the foot down even jus a little while driving and dusnt seem 2 have as much power. jus wondering if anyone has any ideas of wot the problem could be before i take the car to teh garage to get checked out.

Pop some Octane booster in and then make sure you fill up with Super Unleaded in future

I assume you have an import?

Rather than a UK spec car

Yeh its a 99 wrx sti import!

Have tried octane booster and cleaned the idle control valve, also filled up with optimax since but still running with the same problem.

99 WRX STI will be gagging for 100ron fuel, the ECU in the car would have been seeing Det and pulling the ignition back as far as possible

Get that ****  out the car asap by lots of low revs driving round town or open the tank hatch and pump it out into a bucket

Once the tank is empty, refill with Optimax and a bottle of booster and then reset your ECU by using the black and green plugs under the dash or going to a local Subaru garage and getting them to plug in the Select Monitor with the purpose of resetting the ECU due to poor fuel.

If this happens again go for BP Ultimate plus booster as a poor alternative or Q8 Super Unleaded plus booster as a really poor alternative.  Keep some Octane Booster in the boot and use this in the tank before filling up and always use Super Unleaded of any variety as a minimum if you cannot access a Shell, BP or Q8.

Thanks will try that, wher about exactly are the black and green plugs under the dash and how do i use them to reset the ECU?

Look under the dash at the steering column

You will see, might be taped up out the way if never used before, 2 Green connectors and 2 Black connectors.

With the car at operating temp, this is important

Switch car off and remove ignition keys

Connect the 2 Black together and then the 2 Green.

Turn on the ignition and you will hear the fans switching on and off, the boost solenoid clicking away on the drivers strut area, and the fuel pump switching on and off.  This confirms the car is in diagnostic mode.

Before you start the car hold the throttle to the floor for 30secs and then halfway for 30secs then release

Start the car and drive it

After a short time the Check Engine Light will steadily flash with an equal on and off flash.  This steady flashing sequence now idicates that the ECU has been reset back to factory perameters.

Switch off engine and disconnect the Black and Green connectors.

Your ECU is now reset.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now with Optimax and booster in the tank take her out for a spirited run and the ECU will learn its new fuel quality and run accordingly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you get a abnormal unsteady sequence of Check Engine Light flashes then the ECU is detecting a fault and will not reset the ECU until the faulty component is fixed or replaced.  This code will give a long flash first then a short flash like 2 long light flash and 3 quick flashes would be a code 23

Or

Take it to Subaru and ask them nicely to reset the ECU with Optimax and booster in the tank
