As above...

Looking for someone reasonably local to give me a hand to fit something to my car.

As some of you may remember, I got wind-deflectors fitted to my blobeye late summer of last year. These are the bits that go up the A-pillar and along the roof-line.

A west-coast Subaru dealer fitted them, but unfortunately a noise appeared straight afterwards which was pretty loud inside the cabin. The dealer took the car back twice and tried to fix but without success, so they gave me my money back (parts + the fitting) - which I thought was very good of them.

The parts are held on by both double-sided sticky tape and clips, and I was told that they can be removed if need be, but they cannot be re-fitted. It was only the passenger-side one that was causing the problem last time, the drivers side was fine. The dealer removed both sides when they refunded me.

I decided last week to buy another set of these (approx. £60) and they are at home awaiting fitting - didnt fancy paying another £60+ for an hours labour. I plan on following the instructions EXACTLY with the hope that either the garage didnt fit the passenger side one properly last time, or there was a small flaw in the actual part. My fingers are crossed and double-crossed that there is no repitition of the noise this time!

So..... anyone local fancy lending a hand? Just to basically read the instructions & make sure i'm interpreting them correctly, and i'm actually following them properly! I have a bit of a tendency to cut corners occasionally.

I'm in Leith,so wouldn't mind giving u a hand, but I'm totally useless at these things. On saying that I have these fitted to my STi wagon ( I still have loads of wind noise),but I guess u could compair how mines are attached etc.

Anyways,I'd be of very little help, but offering to help if u can't find someone a little more car savy than me.

Being a sort of an expert in tapes and adhesives, I would just point out if your using d/c pads, that the cleaning is the one part of the equation everyone overlooks, I cannot stress enough how important this part of the process will be. Especially if your a regular polisher like me, firing silicone over the car every weekend.....

Silicone, waxes, glass cleaners are all major no no's when it comes to acheiving a bond....so get them off properly, with some good quality cleaner, dont use white spirit especially......

I would be crap at helping you fit them, but just wanted to make you aware of the cleaning side and its importance....

cheers

Ricey - i'll let you know how I get on - cheers.

Niall - thanks for the offer - i'll bear it in mind!

Paul - Yep, thought of that - the instructions mention K500 primer, but none is included in the pack of fixings etc. I searched the tinternet and a couple of places say this is just a degreaser - so i've managed to get hold of a few ispropanol wipes. The instructions say wipe once, let it dry fully then wipe again before applying the parts.

Do you have any other recommendations on what types of cleaner to use, and where to get them?

Thanks for the words of advice though!

You should be spot on with the IPA wipes, they are what I would have recommended anyway.....its just they are not that easy to pick up sometimes......

Is there any brand on the pads.......????

Havent heard of K500 primer, but I do have other primers, but they are really for applying to either glass or unpainted metal to increase the bond.....and need to be treated with care around painted surfaces....

Will ask tom in work and see if there is anything else I can find...........I could get you some small samples rolls of a clear 3M Very High Bond tape, I mean this stuff is the Dogs for bonding......only thing is once its on...its on..and probably not come of again...!!

cheers

Paul,

Dunno what brand they are, as i'm still waiting for one of our engineers to drop them off! We use them for cleaning the ends of bare fibre optic cable before we splice ends on.

Was hoping to get these fitted @ the weekend, weather permitting.

If i dont manage to get them i'll try some meths.

Andy,

I'm car-less on Saturday, but if you can get to mine (Uphall) on Saturday, I'll be happy to help (weather permitting) [;)]

You've been married a year Andy?

F**k me, it seems like just yesterday I was reading about it on the forum. Has time passed that quickly?

Sure is stephen, doesn't seem like it to us either.

Back on topic though..... anyone else got hints or tips, preferably ones that don't involve putting brake fluid on my car! (i can only assume that was an attempt at humour there dave)
