SergeantScooby Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 well having had the scoobie for a week and loving it, i slide today trying to exit my cark park which is on a serious hill and dam it slide, too much throttle me thinks, it did kiss the curb slightly and put a little scrape on the rear offiside alloy NOT HAPPY that will teach me, i shall be driving like a granny from now on
kloon Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 I had my first go in the Scoob in the snow on Tuesday morning and nearly lost it on Holburn Street. Took my flamin time this morning, that's for sure ! If anything, the weather here is getting worse instead of better.
WUZ Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Lightweights! - Looks like you need to attend the Kingswells Park and Ride snow seminar that I unofficially hold every night in snowy weather. I'll be there tonight if you need any tips[] Russell
SergeantScooby Posted March 1, 2006 Author Posted March 1, 2006 wuz, i put it down to been new in the scoobie and having come from driving a golf tdi perviously rather than driving skills, well that my excuse anyway and i am sticking to it lol is it not a bit dodge playing up at kingswells cameras and cops ?
kloon Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Aye Wuz, i'm, with SergeantScooby on this ane, i'm only in my 3rd week of owning a Scoob, so that's my excuse an all [] Must admit the Park n Ride does sound tempting though . . . there used to be a nice wee car park doon the beach for donuts etc till they went and built that feckin "Leisure Park"
Rob_D Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Simple answer there, winter tyres! People think just because they drive a 4 wheel drive vehicle that they have an major advantage over other cars in the snow, you might have an advantage starting off and slight inclines but because the tyres are wide you are eventually going to lose grip then your in the same boat as everyone else, four wheel drive or not! Up in Aberdeenshire I would strongly recommend a set, and as most of the winter tyres are an all year round tyre there's no panic in removing them. Rob.
vicki Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Wuz, do you hold unofficial normal driving seminars lol. I don't go out in the snow [:$]
SergeantScooby Posted March 1, 2006 Author Posted March 1, 2006 rob, you got a point there, am afraid since i got the scoobie things a little tight right now moneywise so wont be going for the winter tyre, but out of interest what differs them from others is it just thread depth or pattern ?
Rob_D Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Serg, Winter tyres are better in winter for two reasons 1. The polymers they use allow the rubber to remain more flexible as the temperatures drop. Summer tyres go harder and their grip reduces below roughly 5 deg C. This gives better grip on ice as well. 2. Tread pattern/blocks. The blocks are designed to move around more providing better grip and allowing snow/ice to fall out of the treads instead of being compacted in. The cost of a set is around £320, I have Nokain WR's on mine for 3 winters now and still have 8mm of tread left (started off with 10mm), these will be good for at least another 5 winters or so. Think about the long term use then the cost seems small, however they are worth every penny if it stops you having an accident. Rob.
johns Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 I fully agree with Rob. Got my Michelin Alpin's this year since I'm living out of the city centre, and they transform the car in the snow and ice. I've got a video of me accelerating on a very slippery road surface (compacted snow and ice). I get up to just under 60mph in about 9 seconds or so (don't start accelerating until almost 3 seconds in), and then lift off and coast down to the 30mph speed limit ahead. OK, it's not super fast and I don't hit the red line in each gear, but it's still faster than the majority of cars can do on a dry road, let alone snow and ice! John
paddy247 Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 The snow is ment to hit the central belt over sat and sun with a bit if rain, and then full on on monday, yeehaaa
st3ph3n Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Damnit. I'm supposed to be making a trip south of the border for the weekend. Don't fancy getting stuck on the 74 down in the wilderness much. Snow is rubbish when you're actually trying to go somewhere. When you're not it's great. Curses.
neilswrx Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 got nokian tyres on me wrx good grip just love it when i come up against numptys drivining igloos on the a90,esp with no lights at 6:45 ta very much but biggest problem is lack of snowploughs clearing up the streets esp comming off the dualer supose too busy up and down the main roads, bring on mair sna
