st3ph3n Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Grant. Pish easy mate. 20 minute job. I'm off all week and could help you out. Laptop should have wireless built in so that's no problem. Tower - will it be near source of the broadband? If not then would need a wireless card. Which is cheap. Your 360 will need a wireless attachment thingie too if it's not at the source. They're not cheap though. What Broadband do you have. ADSL or Cable? An all in one ADSL Modem and Wireless router is about £40, if you have cable it's slightly different, but about the same, maybe less.

the squiggle Posted January 17, 2006 Author Posted January 17, 2006 Andy, your resume looks up to spec...... Looking at the end of the month to do the dirty deed Stephen I am on NTL cable My mothers PC is right next to the NTL Modem My new laptop is all singing and dancing Wireless doo dah Xbox 360 Wireless adapter is 60 notes The old set up was my mothers PC was the host and i networked the 2 together using a crossover ethernet cable and 2 network cards The down side of this was my mothers PC was on 24/7, the reason it blew when the power surge happened, the Ethernet cable goes from window to window {nasty draft for the last 3 years}, and i need to swap over cables if i wanna play the Xbox 360 I need to go Wireless as i now have a proper laptop and can do this without wires, so i am told. I am not gonna install or touch anything on the new PC and leave it to FS, Andy, Stephen or unknown as i have a habit of having a Basil Fawlty moment when trying this stuff I honstley do not know how i am getting internet access on this laptop as i just plugged in a normal RJ45 cable, reset the modem, clicked on IE and it connected. Getting normal 750k - 850k download speeds so it might be running our connection or it might not Grant

Grant
st3ph3n Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Grant, you'll need something like this. I recommended the 3com ones to some people at work as I'm currently using one of their access points at home with great success, and I never got any complaints. I personally hook up 2 laptops, a Nintendo DS, a PSP and my new MDA Vario Phone to my Wireless. My xbox, xbox 360, PS2 and Cube are all cabled up, as is most of my other PCs though. Other than that you'd just need a bit of cable to connect to your mum's PC to the router and you're quids in. I don't know if the other guys have any recomendations for cable routers or have any cheap ones going spare. Most stuff I've dabled in has been ADSL based.
pmacFTO Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 thye benefit of the router (as I tell my customers) is that you don't need any particular PC on all the time - the net connection goes direct into the router so it is always on when any of the connected PCs need access. I have been snapping up the D-Link Router and USB Wireless Adapter deal PC World have on just now - done a few installations and it's easy - so much so I would suggest u give it a go yourself! http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/852034 There are plenty guides on the web on how to get the 360 connected too. Once you have the wireless router ALL your wifi stuff should be able to see it - the Dlink has a great control panel which makes it easy to see what devices are connected and the manual is good too....plus DLink are made by Cisco - and you can't get much better than that!
st3ph3n Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 pmac, how you found the uptime on the D-Links. Had a problem with one that was up and down like a hooer's knickers. I swear by my Westell ADSL router. 300+ day uptime.
Guest Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 hi grant, i have looked at routers for our laptop ... being on ntl also there are very few ntl like ... the one i fond is the belkin nimo router .... 125mbs plus so its the quickest set up at the min. others will no doubt advise. what you could get for your mums pc is a wireless card so the router isnt connected to pc or laptop. you can get the above on flee bay or the shops. alan
IanJ Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Check out Digi Dave I've bought a few pieces of kit from him with no problems (Even replacing a faulty unit without receiving the knackered one from me first) Most of his kit is factory refurbished which means it's cheap and is still under warranty.
Triggerdf Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I just got a router for Telewest for £35 , it works a treat(the same one would work NTL) , setting it up is almost as easy as pluging in a few cables Just make sure its a Cable/DSL Router and not a ASDL one , or it wont work , Get in touch if you need a hand i`m sure i could write out a simple enough guide for you, I have my Laptop, Desktop, PS2, 360 and PsP all running of one connection Trigger

Hope nobody went out and bought a d-link!! lol
andy Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Buggers made me go to Sh1tland..... errr, sorry, I mean Shetland this week. Squirrel, still happy to sort this out if services required.
the squiggle Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 Looking to do the wireless thing on the first weekend of February or the first available Sat/Sun in Feb Plan is for you to have a look at the 2 computers and then the 2 of us head to Glasgow and purchase the correct components. You wire all said components together, configure available wireless units and then we head for nosh at Peters place. Cheers mate Grant
ANDYJDMSTI Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 << then we head for a nosh at Peters place. Cheers mate Grant >> bloody disgraceful..............and on a family site too!!!!!!
andy Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 No hassles. Squirrel, I touch goats. I've set up four wireless networks for friends/family all using Belkin kit. Living in Kincardine even named my own wireless network as "Tulliallan Police College Private WAN" for a laugh and though many have sniffed and tried, none have managed to breach My only tip would be - NEVER set one up for your parents. The phone won't stop every time they break it
Gumball Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 << << then we head for a nosh at Peters place. >> hahahahahahahahahahahahahah
the squiggle Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 PM received and understood Mothers PC is right next to the modem so hardwiring her PC would be the best option and try snd get my stuff wireless Her new PC is up and running but i have not connected in to the internet so it does not conflict any kind of work you need to do Will be in touch soon Grant
Gumball Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 << Mothers PC is right next to the modem >> could be the MOTHER board then pmsl
the squiggle Posted January 25, 2006 Author Posted January 25, 2006 Turns out it was the Mother board that blew along with the RAM and Processor Andywrx I touch goats my good man Wilky explained to me the military term for nosh up, oh you guys are sooooooooooooooo funny!!!! Grant
the squiggle Posted January 29, 2006 Author Posted January 29, 2006 Cheers Andy for an awesome bit of work. Could understand the frustration when the NTL person started giving out poor information on purpose!!!!!!!!. Lesser men would have thrown in the towel but i applaud your persistance Again thanks and finally i can close my bedroom window properly. Grant {now posting on a fully wireless connection from my car on the psp}
