Not got time to explain what I mean just now.

Im sure the squirrel might manage to shed the true light on proper Anti-lag systems before I get home.

I was just curious to see how your was working via the Gems.

I had it on the last car i had, but it was just the kiddy on version.

All it realy did was limit the rpm on gear changes and let you keep the throttle wide open.

It was very poor.

Proper ALS systems require a second fuel and air supply to run.

As i said, I just wondered what was fitted to your cars.

the original 80's style Anti-Lag-Systems, as used in the Grp B Quattro, used to run off an aux injector and air supply because the std 80s ecu were very primitive units, so your correct

Modern day systems run off the std injectors and air supply but still require some way of stopping the pressurised air getting to the servo and rendering your brakes unusable

It basically retards the ign until the power stroke and floods it with fuel. When it ignites the force of the expanding gases causes the exh wheel in the turbo to spin thus creating boost on the compressor side. Proper ALS only runs on part throttle/closed throttle situtions and should run normal ignition levels at full throttle

the reason GEMS can do ALS is the abilty to store a second map and when the switch is thrown it will now read from the 2nd map, the 2nd map conatains the Anti lag map and the first map is the road map

My old classic ran GEMS, for a time, and suffered the same symptoms as Johnny50 and required a proper mapper to sort with a relative degree of success. On its initial MAP it would produce about 0.1 bar on a closed throttle after fitting a Prodrive dongle hose, which basically closed of the idle return and brake servo return, and getting a proper map on it. The car would produce 1 bar of boost on a closed throttle at 1300rpm

Main benefit of GEMs is it does away with the MAF sensor and relies on an Air Temp sensor located near the throttle body

Big drawback is AndyF does not map the pesky thing and i do not think it has any kind of live Knock Correction. The ECUTEK stills keeps the onboard diagnostic intact and will throw a CEL if any of the perameters fall out of line.

Personnaly i would go for the ECUTEK or better still sell the new age and buy a classic with a Apexi PowerFC

Very interesting reading you have put down..Grant

But there must be more advantages with the GEMS ECU than you have just said.

Let me learn more please Grant as i would wonder why RALLY cars run with GEMS rather than ECUTEK?

There must be more reason to this maddnessface-icon-small-blush.gif

very interesting and informative post grant, learn more every time i come on here....

second your comments peter, would like to know too.....although i reckon my gems was defo worth the money.....

Simple my Oriental friend

ECUTEK is a reflash of the std ECU with new s****y perameters but can only contain 1 map to read from. GEMS on the other hand can contain 2 maps and the switch on the dash interchanges between the "Road" map and the "Stage" map. So both have thier pluses and minuses

When i say map, i mean the reference table the ECU looks at to determine ign timing and injector timing

Will discuss further over Cheesecake on Sat night.
