Hi Amanda and welcome.

If it is a JDM (Japanese Import) car there you should be running Optimax/Super Unleaded PLUS an Octane Booster, unless your car has been remapped for UK fuel. That may be why it is not running well.

Lots of info on here - someone else will post up too if you can tell us what car you have ie - 1999 UK spec Turbo 2000, 1996 WRX STI version 3 etc etc?

Hello Amanda,

Your car should be mapped for UK fuel and will run okay on Super unleaded, however if you fancy driving it like you have just stolen it, then put a bottle of octane booster in the tank before you fill up, this will ensure its flushed into the tank.

The octane booster will alter they way your fuel burns in the engine when you drive hard. If you are just cruising about then Super Unleaded on its own will be fine.

thats what i was wondering if i should be puttin a booster in it i dont no much about these things

is there not much difference from optimax and super unleaded

thanks

I run optimax in mine, without octane booster. It is recommended for 97+ RON fuel, but it will also run (poorly) on standfard unleaded.

I would look at there being other reasons for its' poor running as it is a UK car, so should be fine on most fuels.

Do you still have it under warranty - getting it looked at by a Subaru (or other) garage, plugged into a select monitor may show up some issues. Was it running the same before service? If not, get it back into them - it may be something pretty simple.

These are reliable cars - other than minor niggles, and major engine failures face-icon-small-blush.gifface-icon-small-shocked.gif

Hi Amanda,

As the guys have mentioned above if your cars a UK then it should be OK on BP ultimate etc.

If its running a bit dogged then as wilky says try a bottle of MILLERS POWER BOOST which should help it runs a bit better due to the increase in octane levels.

All you can do apart from that is try using a different garage as the tanks could be minging OR fill up somewhere outside the village, sorry Greenock.

Last thing,......if the clowns (possibly) at the garage that did your service have overfilled the oil then it could be in your hoses and would make the revs/boost/running chug along like a fish supper on a tumbledryer

About 1.5 RON, at car tuning level then thats alot, at your level, not really.

Yes shell optimax is better really but Super Unleaded is fine, if you are going to go a wee bit daft, put octane booster in first as a kind of failsafe.

<< hi amanda

there is shell garages in linwood and at glasgow airport >>

The one at the airport has shut down and getting turned into BP or JETface-icon-small-disgusted.gif

You're welcome Amanda. We are quite helpful sometimes face-icon-small-wink.gif

A lot of short runs may not do it any good either, a good long run would be good for. As would driving it hard sometimes too face-icon-small-blush.gifface-icon-small-shocked.gif

When you put the shell in, try and get a good full tank of it and put in some octane booster too. Then give it an "Italian MOT" as the saying goes - ie. drive it very hard everywhere for a while, to let the ECU reset itself.

Erm forgive me for being pedantic here but what exactly do you mean by "running abit sick"??? face-icon-small-confused.gif

does it cut out and hesitate on throttle?

does it idle rough?

does it come on boost then cut out feeling like you have hit a brick wall?

How many miles does it have on the clock?

do you get these symptoms only when cold or also when warmed up?

It may be as simple as a bad batch of fuel but more info is needed to eliminate alot of possibilities and for people to give a more informed opinion face-icon-small-wink.gif

oh and welcome face-icon-small-happy.gif

oil levels !!!!!!!!

Halleys did mine and put half of the Middle east resovoir in it i think.

made it run crazy, revs flying up, dropping down, boost spike.

took it back and got them to blow the hoses

Just to point out here, adding octane booster wont give much/any boost in performance if you have had a bad fill of fuel.

The ecu will need reset.

If the car has had low octance/dirty fuel in the tank and been driven, it will have been detected by the ECU throught the knocksensor.

It will have retarded the timing right back so it runs safely on the lower quality fuel.

Most folk are under the illusion that they just need to fill the car up with Optimax and stick some booster in to get it back to normal again, but it wont work straigh away. It can take tens of fills of Optimax before the ECU comes back up to its original setting.

The easiest option in cases like this where poor fuel has been used is to run the tank down and refill with Optimax, let the tank get down to half again and then reset the ECU.

You can do this yourself by simply removing the negative from the battery and leaving it over night.

Either that or take it to a Subaru dealer for a reset.
