MK2 Ford Escort V's Subaru Impreza WRX

It's funny, the "best" car I've ever driven, and have been driven in, was a properly prepared MK2 Escort, 2.1 ltr, twin 50's, balanced all Steel pinto, coilovers, seam welded, dash adjustable brake bias, quick shift, quick rack, passenger footrest, buckets, harnesses, LSD, full fire system you name it?.

?..But, it didn?t even have enough BHP to spin a set of 205 Colways on take off? And you could hardly turn the steering wheel at less than 30mph because of the quick rack. However it went into hairpins at 70Mph (braking about 20yards before entry) and could make your eye balls and internal organs hurt on the brakes.

We always used Colway remoulds on the Escorts and they did grip more than the tyres we all run on the scoobs, but you know what I'm getting at. Acceleration is good to have but it?s the lesser dealer of G Force and it's the G's that knock the wind out of you and give you that strange happy/fear feeling IMHO.

Of course there is an element of ?Rose Coloured Specs? here and lap times make the older cars look slow compared to what we have now. I do however find my ?03 WRX with the spec in my signature quite boring TBH. It could just be that it does what it does so easily, and I suppose that?s a compliment to modern engineering.

To good for its own good perhaps? Dunno, would like to hear some other angles on this.

Rant over.

Thank you for reading.

Robbo.

Your point is what?

I used to rally a Mk1 1300 Escort so I have an inkling of what you are talking about. Didn't spend too much time sideways with that beacause I ran good Dunlop racing rubber and 110 bhp (at wheels)just wasn't enough to spin them in the dry. Had to keep it clean for good times. Loved to drive it though because it was so damn positive and could stop on a sixpence.

I understand what your saying, but perhaps if you compared a properly prepared MK2 Escort

to a properly prepared Subaru Impreza then the the list of mods would be similar.

Am sure after a shot in a race spec subaru you would be saying it was the best car you has ever driven.

As you say "it could just be that it does what it does so easily, and I suppose that?s a compliment to modern engineering" is quite true

and thats why i didnt buy another family car and hate driving Lyndseys brick (fait stilo).

My uncle has had loads of old RS's, thinks it's bout 14 or 15 mk2's! They were great when a was just a wee guy.

When my 106gti was away getting fixed he gave me a Java Green mk2 RS2000 as a courtesy car, i didnt want to give it back!

New cars are so advanced now, but wud love to have a toy in the garage, just to hard to get a good one and u'll defo pay top dollar 4 a good one.

Agree with all of the above - I am sure they are both excellent cars, when prepped to the same standard, just do it in a different way. I am sure, however, that a race prepped Impreza or Legacy would provide a fierce challenge to any other modded car, whether Ford or otherwise.
