irish al Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Driving along to work today and passed two coppers in an unmarked car. Dont know why i noticed them but i did. They followeded me (behind another car) for five minutes down the road and off at a junction. By this point i was driving by the book because i knew they were there and didnt want to get pulled over. They overtook the car behind me and squeezed into the gap directly behind me and pulled me over. Was expecting to get the usual check over for insurance, tax disc etc, mabye a few questions about my exhaust, sunstrip, or check tyres. Had all my preplanned excuses/reasons running round in my head but nothing prepared me for what he said. Him "Good morning Sir, do you realise you have a dirty number plate" Me "I didnt realise it was that dirty" Him "Do you have a cloth" Me " I am afraid i havent got an old cloth in the car" Him " Would you like to step into the patrol car sir" Ended up with a £30 fixed penalty for dirty number plate. Moral of the story: When a copper asks if you have an old cloth, jump out of the car, take you sock off and clean the number plate. No sock is worth £30
paddy247 Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 opps not so good, could have been worse though

scoobymadburd Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 WOW i saw some dirty cars today too and the police were no where i am really shocked!!! sorry to hear this Al have you washed the car since?? Claire
andy Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Mate of mine got pulled a month or so ago for dodgy spacing on his number plate. After talking to him they told him he'd passed their "attitude test" so they weren't going to give him a penalty and gave him 14 days to get the plate sorted. He got into a bit of banter with them (Lancashire Lad - has the patter) They told him they'd pulled a guy a few days previously who was dead cocky and didn't pass the "attitude test". Fairly new car - they checked tyres, lights etc etc. He was so sure they'd find nothing wrong. "Turn on your wipers sir" - worked fine. "Now your washers sir"... Oops - empty washers. £30 fixed penalty. The moral of the story is if they want to have you, they'll have you.
the squiggle Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 They would have had a field day if they had stopped us in Blairgowrie on the way back I had the cops tail me all the way to work but never stopped me. Grant

alistair_learmonth Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Write to chief constable and ask if this is good practice in dealing with motorists at a time of year when keeping cars clean is difficult during a journey. He will at least go down his line of command to the constable who will have to in writing state why he took such a course of action, was no alternative available, was a garage not close or within distance to proceed and get offending plate washed. He can counter you were cheeky or narky and you gave no alternative. To counter this answer in your letter any thing he can make up to back his action, get your preemptive strike in first. A thought, I would have asked nicley if he had any wype available in his car as he must be prepared for such weather, lol
Gumball Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 sorry to hear this mate. i wiped mine thinking i may get some points two weeks in a row. thankfully. not good
mazheriqbal_mohammed Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Shocking mate sorry to hear it! Makes me feel like a should give the car a quick clean before i next go for a run.
fai17 Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Sorry to hear that m8 I would really cosider what GSP has said. Write to them explaining what the road condition is like and the fact is that not everyone carries a cloth with them or do they ( i don't) You've got nothing to lose now.
frank c Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Shocking..............I drive around Edinburgh all day and frequently see Police cars with all kinds of defects. Always wanted to stop them and see what they have to say for themselves.....not that brave though...
ScoobyAndy Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 << Shocking..............I drive around Edinburgh all day and frequently see Police cars with all kinds of defects. Always wanted to stop them and see what they have to say for themselves.....not that brave though... >> I know what you mean. I once got stopped on a random road check. Told them to get on with it, but if they didnt kind i was going to have a look round theyre car and check it out too. Found nothing wrong with mine but they had a break light out. Never had any more problems since then (touch wood)
oobster Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Bad luck Al, but as GSP says - I would write a polite letter asking for an explanation However, i once heard a story from an ex-policeman. He had stopped someone late at night for having a headlight 'out'. When the motorist pointed out that one of the patrol car's headlights was also 'out' the policeman then proceeded to put his truchoen through the motorists headlamp assembly and cheekily remarked "Thats what you get for being a smart-arse". It pays not to argue with the coppers!!
st3ph3n Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 I fought the law and the law BEAT ME TO DEATH. I washed my car yesterday lunch time and 60 miles later it's almost as bad as it was. The amount of cars I saw going down 15 miles of the M74 this morning that were sporting unreadable number plates could be counted on 10 hands. Do you think they'll all get £30 fines? Doubt it.
G.T. Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 I cant be bothered with the rozzers . The other week there my mrs and my daughter were walkin past the local poice station in my town and a poice van came from the back of the station and nearly knocked my daughter over . The poice woman that was driving drew her eyes off my mrs and was goin to drive on. My mrs told her to wind her window down and asked her what she was doin , the officer replyed that she was on an emergency call and didnt see my daughter , then she procceded to speed along the main st with no sirens or flashin lights on. My mrs then went into the station to complain to her seargent , turns out she wasnt goin to an emergency call at all just a call . The seargent came to the house to apologise for the officer ,I think she got a bollocking for it .My mrs even got a letter from the superintendant from the station saying she would be reprimanded plus they blocked of the alley they came out from. Im also still waitin 3 months later for the helpful constabulary to catch someone for doing over my house, keep being told they are waiting for dna results . My boss is an ex traffic cop and he is still a cant so maybe it is bred into them.
