Windscreen Fit turns into Nightmare! Named the Swines

After waiting for about 3 weeks i finally got a phone call from the windscreen people (Will remain nameless for now) to say they had the front screen and set a date to fit it, yesterday.

All was going well, i'd taken the trims off prior to them arriving so the old window came out in 10 mins but then things went down hill....

They'd put masking tape up the A-pillars and across the top of the window when they were cutting it out to protect the paint, common practice i'm told. They cut all the old bond off then started removing the tape!!!

As they removed the tape from the passenger side A-pillar off came the tape along with 4 inches of PAINT right down to the factory primer face-icon-small-shocked.gif

No point having a go at the fitters as they were only doing what they're told to do and after all the paint shouldn't come off like that but i assumed they would have some kind of insurance for instances such as this. They carried on fitting the window but left the trims off since they would only have to come off again when the painting was done.

Next problem, a bonded window has a has thing called a daming rubber or foam strip stuck onto the car prior to the glue being applied to stop it squeezing into the car and also to set the height of the window, they fitted this and then put the window in... as soon as they did it was obvious straight away that there was a problem, the trim clips wouldn't lock onto the metal pins on the A-pillar because the window was sitting too high! You'd think they'd take it back out and sort it, na! "the glue will hold the clips in mate"

What about the trim not fitting properly? It'll be fine they say.

No sooner had they packed up and left and i was on the phone to the local depot.

I was as diplomatic as i could be considering the situation but the guy just wasn't interested, "not our problem mate, the paint shouldn't have come off"

I could go on and on but you get the idea i was just banging my head of a brick wall and wasting my time trying to get through to the guy.

I've now contacted my insurer (who couldn't have been more helpful) and they're now in talks with the windscreen people to try and come to some arangement. End result the November Photo shoot is looking very doubtful as i dont think this is going to be resolved anytime soon.

I'm fairly chilled all things considered, went out for a p**s up last night so the hangover has taken my mind of it face-icon-small-happy.gif

I wasn't going to run the car through the winter any how so it's not too bad in that respect but i could do without the hassle.

Sorry to hear this m8. Seems 2 be hapning more and more often, if ur paying for a service then u expect a top quality job. I got my wheels refurbd back in february, i made sure not 2 mark them and they were immaculate until i got new tyres fitted last month, i told the guys that were fitting them, to watch what they were doing but they were more interestd in getting the job over and done with! Two of my wheels are now markd, hardly noticeable but not what im paying for.

It's not a small company so i dont know how well we'd get on trying to smash them up but i like the thought process face-icon-small-happy.gif

I want the car painted where my mate works so i know it'll get done right and i'm going to push to get the window removed for the paintwork by the guy the bodyshop use. I would have used him in the first place but he's not on the list of approved fitters with my insurer so i would have had to pay the full price of the window. Should have just payed the money, hindsight is a wonderful thing!

To me it seems big companies are faceless and just dont give a flying f*** one or two cock ups wont effect them but small local businesses are more likely to take time and do it properly if they make an a**e of it they wont be in business for long.

Possibly a mass generalisation but in my current situation it's my opinion!

Round 'em up, put 'em in a field and bomb the b*******s!

Customer service is shocking in this country. I make a point of giving my business to the wee man that cares. Word of mouth for me is a better advert than any corporate BS

<< Word of mouth for me is a better advert than any corporate BS >>

a double edged sword that works well.

I use word of mouth to get in the door and hit them with corporate BS

I'm goin to ask my insurers to look into this local windscreen fitter and ask that any future glass repairs be delt with through him, they're the best insurance company i've ever delt with and going by how heplful they've been with this problem i'd like to think they'd be willing to do this for me after all it'll save them any future hassle when one of the so called big companies make a total b**ls up of it.

kenny name the company

i got a window done by rac windscreens stirling

they made a total cock up bonding the window in squint

breaking the trim round window and sticky fingermark all over seats and drivers door

and to top it all they returned car with the newly filled nos bottle empty

Posted

I agree, name and shame. That kinda service is unacceptable. Hope you complained bout the nos bottle!

We, as a nation, do not moan enough.

I however usually say if i am unhappy! Like when i said to the girl in Next when she clearly wasn't listening "i am sorry, are you not listening to me" She was quick enough to get her a$$ in gear then.

Well what the hell they've agreed to pay me £300 and the bodyshop have been authorised to carry out the repairs.

Not had it booked in yet partly because i've just stared offshore and because they're in the middle of extending their premises. One good thing has come of it though, i've decided im going to use the opertunity to get the whole thing re-sprayed.

The worst company i've ever had the misfortune to deal with..............................

RAC Windscreens

As far as im concerned they're complete and utter tossers, fair enough paint shouldn't come away that easily especially not factory stuff but they're attitude towards the issue was nothing short of appauling! They just couldn't give a s**t. If they'd said at the time we'll waive the excess and give you £50 i would probably have left it at that but for the hassle and crap they gave me ill happily take the £300 and still be able to sleep at night face-icon-small-happy.gif

Happy new year to you all when it comes

The primer underneath....was it rubbed down right? If it was shiney primer, then it isn't a factory job IMHO. That explains why it came off so easily.

rac windscreens in dundee done mine when it got chipped, and

it leaked

so a week later one of the head guys came out and re did it, he was much better and took photos of the bad workmanship

Posted

I would not put up with that sort of workmanship.I would of told them get that windowsreen out and i won't a new one fitted propely.Do you need to stand over people when they do job on your car and sort the paint work

As far as i know everything that has been said so far has been factual.

As for insulting language i can only apologise for anything i've said but i didn't think i was being over the top considering the grief and hassle i've had regarding this over the past few months but if i over stepped the mark i'm sorry face-icon-small-sad.gif

The car has been looked at by the guys who are going to paint it and they said it is a factory defect. When it was painted at the factory they most probably use wet on wet primer which means the top coat must be applied before the primer fully dries for it to bite. This saves them having to rub the primer down between coats. They recon that it must have been left slightly too long between coats and since the hotest areas in the oven are likely to be at the top this explains why the problem is around the roof area.

Their attitude towards the problem really had to be heard to be believed, even after the insurance company got involved they didn't have an easy time reasoning with them either.

Still doesnt change the fact that the window is glued in too high!

Noticed the other day while stripping the interior that the gap between the dash and the window is now big enough to get your fingers in, previously you couldnt get the cable for a set of Defi's in it! I know this because i tried when i was fitting them!

hope you get it sorted, like i said the guy that redone mine took pics, you should do the same, i also complained thru the insurance company, then phoned them direct to complain

i am pretty sure the guy came from edin or glasgow to re do it

Posted

I had to go through the insurance company to get anywhere in the first place so they are well aware of the situation.

RAC eventually offered to come out and re-do the window at a convenient time but after this fiasco i politely declined their offer and told them i would rather pay someone else to recitfy the problem.

mate got his done from them a while ago to, in a MR2, they knackered the seals taking the window out, and there was a constant wind noise, they tried twice to seal it...then on the 3rd timje they said

turn your radio up louder

no joke, he was f@@ked off but never took it any further and ended up selling the car

that again was the dundee branch, 3 years ago i think
