The cars time of the year! moody things they are!

Hi peeps

Cars going in for its 30,000 mile service soon, cars sitting at 35,000 at the minute but im not to worried as it was serviced less than a year ago as the previous owner didn't service it at the correct mileage intervils.

Anyway i have a coupe of quests that would love to get answers to if possible.

1. I have heard people say get rid of the panel filter for an after market one, but I know the MAFs are buggers on these cars and nearly all after market ones are oiled to heavy. So I was advised by Spooks the good man he is, to get a STi one. So...

A. Will Nobles if asked swap the WRX one for the STi one if I pay the difference?

B. Will this cost a lot more?

C. Is this really a good way of increasing air flow compaired to a K&N one?

2. I was also told that the oil that goes in with the service could be better.

A. What would people recommend I get Nobles to put into the engine, I have a downpipe decat, back centre replacement pipe, STi backbox and I will get rid of the centre cat soon. I do want to increase the power next year with a remap at some point as well. Also i got recommended Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 or Motul 300V 10w-40 Chrono By Oilman in General Discussion.

B. Will Nobles charge me for their oil if I ask them to put in my own paid for oil that I would supply them?

C. I think this service replaces the gearbox oil as well, should I let Nobles put in there own stuff?

3. I haven't sorted out the engine management light due to the downpipe, will nobles have any issues with this if I was to put it in like that?

4. Damn car also wants insured against all those nasty people out there as well!!! Damn this car is as bad as woman for upkeep! :S

A. My current is Directline, they are cheap unless you mod the car - £150 for 9 months for a stainless exhaust system!!!!

B. Who should I go for next? I dont mind paying a bit more if it means I can mod more and not impact on my premiums.

Anyway thats all I can think about at the moment, I will add in more later if I can remember more!

Cheers

Pete

1. They should do it for money, but you may as well DIY, as it's so easy. face-icon-small-wink.gif

And it may not be BETTER than a K&N, but it'll be safer.

2. I run Millers 10w60, which is my own PERSONAL preference, but there is a few different oil's you can use. Those sound ok to me. Nobles might not fill your car with different oil though, but that goes along the same lines as the filter. Shouldn't charge you for using their oil, if you don't use it though. Their own oil for the box, will be fine.

3. They'll probably make a note of it on their checksheet and let you know about it, when your picking it back up.

4. Insurance is up to you. I use Norwich Union, but i have my ways. face-icon-small-wink.gif

A. Will Nobles if asked swap the WRX one for the STi one if I pay the difference? - YES

B. Will this cost a lot more? - NOT MUCH MORE

C. Is this really a good way of increasing air flow compaired to a K&N one? - WILL MAKE A SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT. A LOT OF GUYS USE STI FILTERS

2. I was also told that the oil that goes in with the service could be better.

A. What would people recommend I get Nobles to put into the engine, I have a downpipe decat, back centre replacement pipe, STi backbox and I will get rid of the centre cat soon. Also i got recommended Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 or Motul 300V 10w-40 Chrono By Oilman in General Discussion. - I WOULD HAND THEM MOTUL 15/50 BUT THIS IS A PESONAL PREFERANCE

B. Will Nobles charge me for their oil if I ask them to put in my own paid for oil that I would supply them? -THEY WILL CHARGE YOU FOR THE TIME TO DO IT. NOT THE PRODUCT

C. I think this service replaces the gearbox oil as well, should I let Nobles put in there own stuff? YES, THAT WILL BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE WAY YOU DRIVE THE CAR

3. I haven't sorted out the engine management light due to the downpipe, will nobles have any issues with this if I was to put it in like that? NO, THEY WILL KNOW WHY. RESETING THE ECU WILL WORK, BUT UNLESS YOU HAD CELLFIX OR A REMAP IT WILL COME BACK

4. Damn car also wants insured against all those nasty people out there as well!!! Damn this car is as bad as woman for upkeep! :S

Greenlight Insurance

The guy actually knew what a subaru was and he didnt

have to go ask the manager what a dumpvalve was.

Best bit is you can add as many mods as you like, as long

as they dont increase the BHP and still keep the car road legal, for no extra cost.

I even put on a few extra mods I havent done to the car yet so

I wouldnt have to pay the 25 admin fee when I do add them.

On top of this they will insure for track use for 85 pounds with double access.

Just get an STI filter and fit it yourself; takes 5mins.

Then when the cars getting serviced just mention to Nobles that you've already changed the filter.

The air filter on these cars is not a major disadvantage unless your car is heavily modified. There's been plenty of cars running std panel filters with over 300bhp.

i tried to insure mine with elephant as my last one was through them ..but when they asked me if any mods had been done i told em it was standard apart from a dump valve..they refused me saying they dont insure cars which have been modified

They are talking crap - you can even add all the mods during the online quote process - there is a very comprehensive list of them. I find them very good with mods, and not much charge - certainly not compared to the likes of Direct Line etc!

Nobles used Shell Helix 5w/40 as recommended by Subaru - it is fully synthetic.

It may not be to do with your decat, it could be something else like the air/fuel sensor or a crankcase sensor so I would leave it as it is. I've had my 04WRX with full decat at Nobles a few times and they weren't bothered about it. CEL light was on twice, 1st time was above sensors and 2nd was the wastegate solenoid valve which they put down to the decat.

I have had a jr panel filter since i bought the car from new and the said panel filter was to blame for the maf going i am on my third one .But i still use the jr panel filter got the last maf on i think it was subaru 3year warranty or 2 year extended and the last maf is still on the car .I wipe the metal gauze in the airbox every so often

Lts no get confused here - are the MAF's on new ages not more robust than the ones on Classics ? Not getting at you - just want to distinguish between the two so that we can help Pete out face-icon-small-wink.gif

Pete w.r.t "I have a downpipe decat, back centre replacement pipe, STi backbox and I will get rid of the centre cat soon. You will be an awesome burble will full decat and will see a bug difference over more restrictive the STi BB face-icon-small-wink.gif

See you tommorow at KH face-icon-small-wink.gif
