OT. River Orchy Fishings, Argyll

Heading up on Friday for the day and looking forward to both the drive and the fishing.

Has anyone fished it recently or regularly?

I'm looking for the river's recent form and any particular tackle tips / local flies if poss.

Oh, and any information on "monitored" bits of road on the A83 / A85 : Dumbarton to Bridge of Orchy and back via Inverary would be gladly received.

Not that I'll get much chance, but sometimes when stuck in a queue the temptation gets to you.

For what it's worth, and bearing in mind that this is mainly a motoring forum, just a follow up :

My headstone will read "Blanked In Some Nice Places".

I didn't see a single salmon today, despite the river being perfect, but I'll be back.

It's a lovely drive, if you're patient this time of year, and Glen Orchy is stunning. Due to the trees though, you have to drive slowly (!) and sometimes get out for a look (!!).

I've driven there before in the close season, when the trunk roads are a bit quiter, and it is a really good round trip. It's about a sixty mile drive from Dumbarton, up Loch Lomondside way. You can have a good snack at Tyndrum and then go right to Bridge of Orchy, and come down the Glen, or go left at Tyndrum (Oban road) and then hang a right before Dalmally which will take you out Bridge of Orchy. Loop.

Well worth it on a good, crisp day, and you'll enjoy the corners on the way.

Funny that me too! face-icon-small-happy.gif

My pal got a 12lber from the Findhorn last Thursday. He said there was a bit of a spate and that helped.

I haven't heard any of the west coast rivers having anything these days. If you want a fish head to the Tay although the Clyde is supposed to be improving and has some great trout.

This thread wasn't meant to run as far as it has but at least it brings some local info to the forum and I suppose that's what it's all about.

Peter, well done on the Sea trout. They're actually better than Salmon to catch and eat. A lot of seasoned Salmon anglers chuck it to go after them and nothing else!

If you really want a chance of a Salmon look no further than the River Leven.

Tip : leave your good car at home, carry a wading staff and a large truncheon. The first will help you negotiate the accumulated rubbish and the second will assist you in despatching the fish and the untermensch.

I speak from experience; it's a shame because £ for lb, it's fantastic value. If the river was removed to the SE of England there would be fifty year waiting list for it, it really is that good.
