~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Guys, Any advice re the link below ? Bugeye Looking for honest opinions from bug eye owners ? Thanks in advance Cal
ANDYJDMSTI Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Cal, IMO i would look around for a sorted bug or classic. something where you do not need to pour much money into it. Personally i would not go for a bug that looked that "plain". andy
the squiggle Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Not a Bug-eye owner as such Go for a properly sorted imported late classic or fugly IMHO Try "Andyjdmsti" for a product review on the difference between the import fugly and a UK fugly I went from a Honda to a Scoob, grin factor is the same if not a wee bit better but the speed the fuel guage drops is astonishing {whisper mode on} The Subarus engine is not as tolerant to excessive track use as the Honda unless you spend some pennies on it {whisper mode off} You will fall in love with the noise from the Zorst and the lady at the Shell garage Go for it Cal Grant (What do i know)
johnnyr6 Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 That's a nice car and a fair price, these decisions are always hard. There is far more performance potential from the scoob and the bugeyes seem to be growing on everyone. Personally i'd rather get a classic STI you should be able to get a my99 sti 5 for 10.5k but then it's all down to personal choice. My mate has a 99 sti5 type r and in standard trim (although 1 cat is removed) it can do a quarter mile in 12.9 secs.
johnnyr6 Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 Forgot to add you should speak to jvs and see what they can get you for your cash, (powervehicles.com)
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 7, 2004 Author Posted October 7, 2004 Thanks for the advice guys - I'm still unsure what to do but have until tommorow a.m to tell this dealer if I'm willing to sell or not Basically I think it's a late classic or stick with the CTR. The bug eye doesn't really smack me in the face and say " buy me " Cheers Cal
Stiks Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 I waited 16 months for my scoob from the first lust. Took me that long to get the readies after I opted out of the company car scheme. I also own and adore my Bug eye ( albeit an STI). I agree with all that is said about the marginal difference in your CTR staright line peformance versus a standard bugeye. the MY05 is out now which may mean a drop in 02 bug, 03 blob prices by up to 3k. Bad news for the likes of me in terms of depreciation. In say 3 or 4 months an 02 STi with c. 30k miles could well be around 12-13k private or 15k in the dealers after a haggle. In short hang off and go for an 03 wrx then mod it or ideally (IMHO) an STI bug which again is ripe for 300 bhp+ + if you want. PM me if you want more of my ramblings Keith
wrxmania Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 Keith - enough ramblings thanks - no need for a PM Cal Good choices though - a Blobeye WRX or a Bugeye STI. See the thread below. Brian Bugeye Performance questions on Scoobynet
MikeABZ Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 Stick with the CTR for now Cal - depreciation, as already mentioned, will kick in on the earlier STI's... that plain one looked a bit dull, and with the running cost of the Scoob you'll not have much ££s to do anything to it. CTR is looking & sounding wicked. Keep it a while longer until you get the scoob you want. I have been through so many cars cos I wanted 1 but bought another out of haste (eg, wanted Nova SR for 1st car... bought 1.2 SR "lookalike" kept it for 9 months... wanted Cavalier GSI, bought a 1.6 with view of doing it up to look like a GSI but never did anything to it and sold it after 1 year.... wanted Fiesta RS Turbo... bought an XR2i and sold after a year...) - pays to wait cos then you enjoy it more All I did was lose money on cars I never really wanted!! Wait for the STI
robinh20mrv Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 hi m8, why not go for a sti v8? andy at jvs www.powervehicles.com he will get you a top mota sti 7 or 8 at a great price! they just sold a very tasty sti 7, cusco suspention, nice pipe ect, you know you want a scooby!! besides, shell need more cash!! cheers robin.
scuba dou Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 Cal, I would hold out an Sti. If not I 'd go for a well sorted Classic with all the right bits, rather than the bog standard WRX, it will need lots of money spent on it to get it to where you will want it to be.....and still not be an Sti. Other thing to look at real hard is spreading the cost over longer to get what you want now. What I mean here is if you are financing a car over 2 or 3 years, then simply selling it and starting again, with more finance, there can be wisdom in taking more money up front now and taking it over 4/5 years, and keeping the car much longer and saving money in the long term by not needing to change in a few years, although it will cost you more on interest, loose money on changing the car in two or three years or loose money on extra interest over the slightly longer periods is what I am saying. One of the best new age cars that is available now with the right bits already on it is Brian Sangsters Sti7. Has 18?, exhaust system, tints, small front grills, mud flaps, etc and is absolutely mint condi-tion. New prodrive springs still in the box. Hope this helps a little.
Boyakasha Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 I'll second what Jools says about Brian's car. PS Jools did you get my PM?
johns Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 Cal, I'd agree with Jools in many ways. Although it's a Scooby, a standard bug-eye WRX is probably not the car for you, as you would want to change a few things almost immediately, like brakes, exhaust, springs etc. If you still want to do track stuff (and why ever not ), then you are really looking for something with something like the AP aftermarket brakes, or the Brembo's fitted to the new-age STi's, as even the Subaru 4 pots with uprated discs/pads/lines/fluids etc will not be up to the job on a hot dry track event. It's much cheaper to buy (and insure) a car with the performance built in, than to buy a slightly cheaper model, and to replace lots of bits on it (though you can do this over time it must be said, and with 2nd hand parts). In your position, I would be tempted to look for a late classic STi/Type-R with a few well sorted mods (exhaust/brakes/re-map for UK fuel etc). Don't worry too much about track use etc, as the car are generally up to it, as long as they haven't been abused/neglected. Alternatively, look out for an earlier bug-eye STI - you can get 2001 JDM ones for about 14k upwards, which although wouldn't come with a warranty, does come with big brakes, firmer suspension, very strong 6 speed gearbox, so would save you having to spend a few K on an earlier car to upgrade it. I could imagine that you could even get a higher mileage UK spec STi for about 16 - 17k, which comes with tracker, mapped for UK fuel, remainder of 3 year extendable warranty, 10k/yearly servicing etc., and cheaper insurance (though still group 20). These cars were 25 - 28k new, and have gone through their big depreciation phase, and are likely to only drop by 3k - 4k over a 3 - 4 year period (based on the current premiums for 99/00 STi's which are still around 12 - 14k for good examples). Interest rates are reasonably low at the moment, so you could quite a good deal on finance at a fixed rate for 4 years say, so the extra interest payments aren't too much of a penalty. One things I would ask you to bear in mind are the fuel costs, especially if you drive the car hard. You would probably still get 20mpg out of your Honda, even when pushed hard, and probably 25mpg average. In the Impreza, you are probably looking at 18 - 20mpg average, and 12 - 15 if you do a lot of hard driving. If you are doing a reasonable number of miles in a year (say 12 - 15k), then the fuel costs soon add up. OK if you do a lot of motorway/steady speed driving, as you can get 25 - 30mpg as long as you keep the speeds sensible, but you don't want to overstretch yourself to get the car you want, only to find out you can't afford to run it as much as you want John
Stiks Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 << Keith - enough ramblings thanks - no need for a PM Cal Good choices though - a Blobeye WRX or a Bugeye STI. See the thread below. Brian q] One further qualification ( not a ramble Brian :frown )- blue and gold is faster... dont go for grey
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted October 8, 2004 Author Posted October 8, 2004 Guys, What can I say...........the advice in here has been first class !!!!!!! I have decided for the time being to keep the CTR ( which i do actually love). I think there is sense in waiting for an Sti7 or 8 rather than buying a lesser car and modding it. I have promised myself a Scooby by the time I'm 30 ( 1.5 yrs to go ) so reckon I'll do one of these "drive the deal" style packages whereby you effectively rent the car and can either hand it back when you want or make the final payment. Having recently moved house i could have paid the CTR off and started a fresh loan for a brand spanking new beast but I guess sometimes we ought to be content with what we have ! If you live in the Grampian area and wonder why you're tailpipe reeks of KY then you know I'll have entered your vehicle in the middle of the night. Thanks again to all for non- biased opinions !!!!!!! Catch ye all at KH on the 23rd cheers Cal
