Subaru Virgin!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am hopefully going to lose my cherry this Saturday when I go pick up my white ‘09 Wrx Sti Hatchback. I’ve had S3’s and type-r’s and all sorts of other hatches but can’t wait to get my first ‘scooby’. I am slightly worried as I know nothing about them and I’ve done as much YouTubing and forum reading as possible to hopefully not come away with a dog! Looking forward to doing stuff to it and I’m in Leeds, west Yorkshire if there’s ever owt going on I’ll be making one in. Any hints or tips for the test drive/viewing on Saturday would be massively appreciated! All take care and have a good week. Jeffers.

Hi Jeffers,

Exciting times ? Welcome to the Subaru world.

Unfortunately I am no expert when it comes to checking cars I usually send someone else ? but I am sure some expertise will be along soon to advise about anything to look for.

I would want to see and start the car from cold and let it warm up and do the usual checks for any fluid leaks and levels. Is it a private sale if dealer?

Floz.

Now then Floz. Cheers for the warm welcome. It’s a private sale. Appears very well looked after with regular services etc. He seems to be an enthusiast and has owned multiple models. Hopefully my lift is going to be my expert! I’ll update with pictures if she comes home with me!!

Hi Jeffers,

a warm possible welcome. The STi 09 hatch, i assume its a UK version so a 2.5ltr. it would be a 2.0ltr if JDM.

i own a 2011 sti UK saloon and need to warn you that there has been some common issue with the 2.5ltr engines.  Listed below are bands roughly effected.

Although some done 100k mile and perfect but saying that my 2.5ltr lasted only 2.5 yrs an 19k miles

2006 to 2012 ring land failure  15k miles to 55k miles

2006 to 2009   head gasket failure 12k m to 40k m

Biggest influense is how much power it runs, how often hit limiter, how good, oils and luck.

330 if PPP or ProR pack.

Most wont touch a 2.5ltr Scoob unless uprated head stud and forged pistons.

long test drive essential 20 to 40 miles

see exhaust on cold start, check water & oil cap

see exhaust on hot start after run, check all again

lock to lock forwards and backwards right and left.

water temp should never vary.

Engine rebuilds circ £5k to £10k so not cheap

Yes you’re right ccrien, it’s showing as North Shields, Alexandra Cars.

Cheers Jeffers,yy   Sure you will enjoy your new car:

they used to do a fair amount of business/ turnover  of WRX and Sti's  but unfortunately Alexandra closed down a few years ago.  Their mantle seemed to be then picked up by Subaru Newcastle (based in Wingrove Citroen) at the time, but they didnt last long. Was just wondering.

We still have a dealer in Northumberland, but what was a small independent and rather specialist outfit where for example you walked straight in to talk part numbers and details  to the parts guys in their den, has now moved after being absorbed into what's primarily a big vauxhall chain with typical glassy showroom and a little front parts desk with a bell to ring!    Sign of the times.
