Disaster Strikes!

So, last week I was driving along then my oil warning light started flickering at idle, so i nursed the car home (about 2 miles). When I got home I could hear a knocking from the engine :( A quick browse online pointed towards a blockage or breakage somewhere resulting in oil starvation. The oil level was fine, it gets checked every fortnight. A visit to Autoecosse comfirmed the worst, knocking bottom end and damaged turbo due to oil starvation :icon_hang:

So, after getting over the disappointment its time to plan what to do next. Its going to be bigger and better! Been looking at engines online, looks like it'll be a 2.5 lump since thats all I can find! I would prefer a new block as im wary of a second-hand one. However, ive found this, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Subaru-Impreza-EJ257-STI-Forged-Short-Engine-20k-miles-/250844915493?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a6785a725

Anyone think its worth going for or am i just better getting a brand new block?

Also, do 2.0 heads fit on a 2.5 block? Ive read they do but need a thicker head gasket to get the correct compresion ratio, true?

Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Kev

Yeh im thinking brand new will be the better and safer option.

Definitly want more power this time, but too mental though. 350-400 is what im thinking just now. Already got a list of parts to buy:

2.5 forged short engine, bigger turbo, uprated fuel pump and pressure regulator, 740cc injectors, front mount intercooler, remap, and a few other bits and bobs.

Ive got about £4500 to splash just now so i'll get what i can.

Any idea about the 2.0 heads on a 2.5 block?

Cheers, Kev

Yes you can fit 2 litre heads on a 2.5 block although they should realy be adjusted to cope as they may well restrict the engine.

Well worth giving Steve Whitson a phone. Put it this way he is building my 600bhp engine for alot less than your total budget.

If you go down the 2 litre route and want a CDB give me a shout as I may well be able to help ;)

I knackered my 2.0 bottom end , i went for a fully forged 2.5 i bought the block, rods ,pistons and arp studs all from america which cost about £1800 for the lot , used cometic coswothh head gaskets and stevie whitson done my heads for the 2.5 . craigdmcd on here bulit my engine may be worth also speaking to him m8 .

Forgot to say bought the parts from the usa via e bay and paypal for extra security as the companies were ranked top sellers , if your going down this route pm me ,il send you the names of the companies

Thanks for the replies guys, some good info there. Looks like Steve Whitson will be getting a phonecall.

Ciaran, i'll see what my options are and let you know about that block. I might just need to outdo you in the power stakes! Haha. Nah, i'll be happy at 400ish but we'll see.

Kev, don't overlook Agra in Dundee as an option. They're a wee bit closer for ya ;). That's where mine was done and have no complaints.

If you're aiming MAX 450 in a road car, 2.5's a good bet. Works for me.

Another vote for Steve Whitson here he's doing a wee bit of work for me as well, but AFAIK he's on his holidays just now.

Bring it on but at the end of the day I am aiming for driveability rather than figures and that magic 10sec quarter and sub 60 seconds at knockers

i thought ops budet was just about right for a standard 2 ltr forged build by time everythings added up, cant believe a big spec engine will come in under that, you must be supplying some parts as well. My basic short motor is not going to be far off that alone and im not going for a big build, just doing it right the first time.

Then there is baffled sump (you will need a new one at least), clutch, modine, oil + water pumps, timming kit, the various gaskets including metal head ones, head bolts. There is then heads to get skimmed, decked and shim tolerances checked, if heads are reusable (sadly mine arent). Then there would be labour for removal/fitting unless op is into DIY. It all adds up very quickly. This assumes you will be sticking with orignal cc too as there will be mapping cost in addition otherwise.

Im talking about a short block built. New liners supplied and fitted, block machined and decked. And then engine built.

Basically the cost of crank, pistons, rods, rod bolts, 4 liners and the machine work to remove the original liners and fit the new ones, deck the block and hone the liners. Block already has a 14mm head stud conversion and conversion for rear thrust crank.

I still need 14mm head studs, baffled sump water pump, oil pump, timing belt kit, and work carried out to the AVCS heads which is all at least another £1k plus if I didn't already have most of the parts :D

I've got a set of RCM 14ml headstuds sitting here, used for a grand total of fifety miles of running in with zero boost. ;)
