2008 hatch

Hi there.. I've just bought my very first Subaru 08 hatch and have to say "what a car.." I'm a biker at heart but only last year lost 3 friends on their bikes so the reality check has kicked in and here i am (the bike is traded..)I'm looking to boost the power by around 40-50HP and wondered where the best tuning facilities were around the Falkirk area? I’ve got the chance of a Hayward and Scott cat back system and wondered if I’m wasting my money/time just getting the cat back only?

Thanks G...

Ha! Another convert! Good choice, sir, and don't let the doomsayers on here tell you otherwise *lol* Hatches rule!

I assume it's all pretty standard at the mo? You can always go for a Prodrive Pack from subaru, but you'll be out of warranty anyways so this maybe isn't an issue for you.

Take a good look at Andy Forrest's site. Cat-back is OK and will give you a pretty good exhaust note over stock, but if you're shooting for those sort of numbers, you're as well to go for a sportcat or decat... you could always get one seperately!

I'd uprate your spark plugs and get a cold air intake - Litchfield or AEM are among the best - and I can strongly recommend Duncan Graham (raceDYNAMIX Time attack driver - Google it!) as an alternative mapper. He's mapped a lot of hatches (mine included) and has a lot of happy customers! He's based down south, but will travel all over... give him a shout.

Anything else you wanna know Hatch-wise, shoot me a PM.

Hi & welcome to the club, there are so many different options you can go for, have a look at Andy's site & it will give you an idea of what you can acheive, a panel filter, cat back exhaust & a map might be sufficient as it's not all about BHP, with the 2.5l engine you can get a massive mid range torque increase with minimal mod's

On my second hatch. Love them.

I've driven the ex RCM hatch now owned by Steve Darley and have to say I loved it as well, I wouldent have minded giving it a proper ragging just to see how it feels when pushed. B)

Thanks for the quick responses and welcomes guys.. Yea the car is completely standard at the moment unmolested you might say...Andy Forrest seems to be the way ahead! Someone told me you have to buy a licence with the remap? Duncan Graham ive heard is really good as well, one of the guys from my work has a bugeye and has mentioned that he was going to call Duncan to have his car mapped but got sent off shore a day or two before Duncan was meant to come to Scotland. What kind of spark plugs do you recommend?

Cheers,

Grant.

Welcome!

wondered if Im wasting my money/time just getting the cat back only?

I'd say you're wasting your money not doing something about the spongy handling first, but hey everyone has their own priorities :D

WRT exhausts, seems that the real gains in power and response are to be had by replacing both the catted downpipe and the lower cat pipe with a single 'sports cat' downpipe. You'll probably also want to replace the fuel pump with an uprated item at the same time to prevent under-fueling. This seems to be very much the tried-and-tested route to 15%-25% torque/power gains.

Not had my Hawkeye STI remapped yet (despite having had the car for almost two years), but Andy Forrest has long been a favourite around here, but also this guy has been gaining favourable reports for his service and competitive pricing:

when you say spongy handling.... what do you mean.. in what way is it spongy?

Can't say my car feels spongy.

My Hawkeye was bog standard when I bought it and I was quite happy with it for a time, before I began to feel that it was a bit detached, vague and uninvolving to drive quickly – I guess that's what I meant by 'spongy'. BTW, I'm not the first to level that criticism at a newage Impreza – and from everything I've read, the hatch WRXes/STIs are at least as 'bad'. Although I'm quite happy to admit that I've never driven one :)

Coilovers, ALK, uprated rear ARB and poly ARB bushes have made my car miles more involving to drive, much more responsive to steering inputs, feel more connected to the road, more stable, more controlled, flatter, etc, etc...

I'm not suggesting that everyone ought to go out and spend thousands of pounds on their Impreza's handling, and if you're perfectly happy with yours then good for you... however, I would say that for the sake of about £150, an updated rear ARB is an very effective handling mod that most any Scooby driver would appreciate (apart from those who own one of the few models that came from the factory with a more balanced ARB setup).

As far as I'm concerned, I'd be doing the OP a disservice not to mention this – some wise people on this very forum tried to tell me the same thing way back, and I wish I'd listened to them earlier ;)

YMMV

Welcome! Another hatch owner, good choice!

Can't fault the handling of my one so far!! I've a full decat, induction kit & remap on mine, think it's round about 340ish, car pulls really hard in every gear, can't wait to get it back on the road once all this crap weather is past!!

Hmmmm now that sounds strangely familiar

When you had a regular STI hatch, I seem to remember at one point you were seriously considering spending the best part of £2K on KW coilovers...

Anyway, no need for you hatch guys to go on the defensive over my comments, just telling the OP what I wish someone had told me way back! (the uprated rear ARB) :)

SK08BYT – did you get any further with your engine performance mods?

You must be getting me mixed up with someone else! This is my first hatch! SK08BYT asked other hatch owners how to get another 40/50 bhp out of their cars, not how to sort the suspension on them?? ;)

Defensive? Hatch owners? Us? NEVER! *lol*

MM, I suspect it was myself and StrikE who were the coilovers chat-abouters, not my esteemed colleague here.

But you're right... ARB makes a BIG difference (to ANY scoob, not just the hatches ;) )

I did get you mixed up with someone else – thought you were Derek (Strike), who also has a white hatch in his avatar and also posted in this thread. My apologies to you and Deek for that!

Erm – do me a favour, mate and don't act like the 'on topic' police – I answered his question about engine performance and I make no apology for making an honest suggestion in good faith about a cheap handling mod. I stand by everything I posted, thanks.
