Baz man Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Hi guys, Going to get my wheels refurbished soon. I have 18inch Prodrive P1 wheels in silver on my Classic. What is the best option - Painted or powder coated ? Is there a paint code for these wheels as i would like to keep them the same colour. Can you recommend anyone. Cheers, Baz
Richie Cross Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Hi mate, I think there have been a few of these discussions and you'll always get a mixed bag of answers. Some will say that powder coating lasts etc but the guy who painted my wheels told me the opposite etc. My wheels costs slightly more than powder coating but it was from someone who I knew would do a good job and I also had the full spectrum of colours/shades available to me. Not sure if that's the case with powder coating. Here's the finished result on mine anyway. Painted by Jim at JB Coachworks in Paisley.
tomwrx08 Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 ive had 4 sets of wheels all painted by peter P@J powdercoating in glasgow. http://www.scoot.co.uk/Scotland/-/Glasgow/...ngs-ICX588.html always done a great job and very gd rates.
Subarstar Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Whatever you do, try and get a recommendation from someone you know. I've seen some really poorly done powder coating, but equally, I've also seen some really poor painting. JB Coachworks in Paisley are good. I've had work done there as well and been very happy with the results. I've also seen work from Chameleon powder coating (Renfrew I think) and they seem to be pretty good too.
ciaranrb5 Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 I have heard about people having wheels break after they have been powder coated due to the process weakning the alloy!! I would go for paint myself far easier to repair if required and cheaper if you strip and prep them yourself and just get somebody to paint them
Baz man Posted September 23, 2010 Author Posted September 23, 2010 Thanks for your input guys. Will prob go down the painted route. Time to get some prices. Cheers, Baz
jamesm Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 I've also seen work from Chameleon powder coating (Renfrew I think) and they seem to be pretty good too. Mine looked fantastic but the lacquer failed after 6 months. Got them re-done earlier in the year by Auto Image on Great Western Road. 6 months on, they are still perfect.
P1-0031 Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Powder Coating will not be good for the alloy, especially if the are lightweight and "soft" I had a horrendous time with Chameleon a while back, I blamed him, he blamed the alloy and it all went very sour. I wouldn't recommend him but at the same time they have done a very good job on a lot of wheels which i've personally seen in the flesh. (powder) Personally I would go for paint as you have a greater spectrum of colours and shades to get it right.

road warrior Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Anyone know a place around Edinburgh that does a good job refurbishing and painting alloys? Got myself some 18" Superleggeras, the rims are kerbed, and been badly rattle canned white over the top. Want to get them done a nice black finish, I'd never keep white clean!!! Any recommendations? Thanks John
