Badgerboy Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 After a few crunching and grinding noises towards the end of our session at Kames on Saturday, it would appear that Ive destroyed the release bearing and 2nd gear. Car in question is a '98' UK 2000 turbo. Got hold of an sti gearbox, it will be a straight swap apparently. Question is...........will I need to change the rear diff also? Dont know much about these things but dont want to fit the gearbox then blow the diff soon after! Thanks in advance Andy
terzo neil Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 check the gearbox code o the tally plate on passenger strut top get a replacement with same code and fit new release bearing at same time
arch Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 The gearbox fitted will prob be a TY754VN1AA whats the code of the one you have bought? I have a spare TY754VN1AA/2AA gea***t available if that helps at all.
euan_r Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 think you will need rear diff without looking at codes. iirc drop gears are different at very least, import vs uk. having gone through a few boxes on a previous car if it happens to me once more i would do it right first time send it straight to api. cheaper in long run, though a pre 99 uk box isnt the best place to start from.
mic Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 May have this totally ar$e for elbow, but isn't there some difference between rear drive shaft on the boxes? I got a V5 sti box to put on my V6 uk2000, only to be told it would need a different rear drive shaft? Or have I picked up the wrong end of the stick? Box is gone now so not too fussed, just incase it's something else he was to watch out for lol
arch Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 The only difference in shafts is with the bigger R180 rear dif which was fitted to most type R's and newage STI's. You may not have to change the rear diff but there is no way to help if you dont put up the codes of the two boxes.
john_stevenson2 Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Hi, if you are fitting an STi box then the rear diff will require to be changed, this is definate. UK cars use 3.54 rear diffs, Jap cars use various (3.9,4.11,4.44), but none of them are 3.54. Arch you are not quite right about the rear shafts, the R160 shafts/rear diffs changed in '99. So a pre 99 diff of the correct ratio will be required to use the existing shafts. If the car is a UK car we don't need the gearbox codes it will be TY752VNxAA (x being variable depending on model year) UK cars retain same gear ratios and final drive ratios across the model years. The code from the STi box is essential though to determine suitability. BTW, if the rear diff is wrong, it won't be the rear diff you will kill, it'll be the centre. So in summary, get the finger oot and tell us the box code
Badgerboy Posted July 18, 2010 Author Posted July 18, 2010 Hi John Current code on my car is: UK/Europe Impreza Turbo 2000 / GT MY98 TY752VN6AA Replacement Gearbox AND Diff is: JDM Impreza WRX & WRX STi MY95 TY752VB3FA 3.454 2.062 1.448 1.088 0.825 3.416 1.000 4.111 Viscous (4kgf) Open All going well, should be fitted by the end of the week.............however I do believe there may be rear driveshaft issues (maybe) Cheers Andy
john_stevenson2 Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 As long as you have the rear diff too you are good to go Andy, shafts will fit ---john---
Badgerboy Posted July 19, 2010 Author Posted July 19, 2010 Many thanks John Got someone working on it as we speak, any probs I now know where to ask Andy
