just in the last week started to notice bit of smoke on idle then a bit of a puff of smoke when i pull away after been stuck in traffic, spoke to the garage and they said sounds like turbo oil seals, will either need sending away for refurb or i can upgrade, car is a my00 uk turbo, only done 53k, looks like im going to bite the bullet and go for an andy forrest hybrid tdo4, not what i needed just now as skint as just paid for my summer hols, car gets driven so gently as well, just one of those things i suppose. gutted.

Got a good TD04 sitting here for 75quid if you want a standard replacement for a short term over the summer.

car is running standard boost, just one of those things, it is over 10 years old. i may take you up on the offer mate, bit short of cash just now so probably my best bet.

where abouts you from mate?? reason i ask is that fasteq engineering in cambuslang will rebuild your turbo for £40-£50 if you supply them with the turbo and the rebuild kit (which you can get on fleabay).

just athought mate but if the car isnt smoking on over run then it might not be the turbo.

thats a good point...

My MY2000 UK turbo sometimes does the same (smoking at idle then a bit when pulling away which then clears) doesn't appear to use any oil.

I'm not sure if mine is oil smoke or rich mixture , I'm thinking it could maybe be faulty MAF of maybe dirty airfilter(APS CAI + K&N)

I'm interested to know the cause but I'm working away and not had time to check it over so I'm watching this thread for ideas B)

My turbo is Andy-F TD-04 hybrid - any idea how much for Andy to refurb it if it is the seals ?

Cheers,

Al

well iv described the symptoms to the subaru specialist garage and the first thing they said was sounds like the turbo seals, i have no other symptoms, ie never overheated, not using water, no noises, car drives spot on etc.

could easily be something like valve stem oil seals though cause it takes avery small amount of oil to get into the combustion chamber to notice abit of smoke and if oil changed regular u wouldnt notice a drop in the level its easy to jump on the 'its the turbo' band wagon not that it couldnt be.Ryan

yep could be the stem seals

but then wouldnt there be smoke on start up? it only appears after its been driven for a bit then sit idling.

if it was the valve stem seals what does fixing them involve? is it a big job?

Posted

it depends how bad the stem seals are really cause on the flat 4 configuration oil doesnt sit directly on top of the seals so on start up it hasent gone down past but once fired the manifold negative pressure draws oil down past best bet is to full throttle up almost to red line and back off and c how much she smokes then cause that would prove turbo or not fella.Ryan

If it was the seals then oil would pass on the over-run, which Jim said isn't happening?

Cheers,

Grant

im afraid then its one of thoses jobs u have to spend money or time investigating what the cause is thats the bitch about oil burning it can be 1 of so many problems, none of which are cheap fixes unfortunatly.Ryan

well ill be changing the turbo soon which is what i was told is the likely cause so i will soon find out. oh and its an excuse to upgrade to an andy forrest td04 hybrid thanks to geo on here. B)
