How about trying one of the many powder coat peeps, as they use acid dipping to ensure metal is totally degreased and squeaky clean before that can coat it?

get yaself a plastic 25gallon drum, cut it in half and fill it with acetone, stick ya block halfs in one by one and leave to soak in it for bout 24hrs.... job done... anything it doesn't shift will come of with a scrub wi some acetone and some wire wool.... simples.

If you're going down that route then vinegar is much easier to get hold of and a fair bit cheaper too.

acetone aint too dear works out at £32 odds + vat for a 5 gallon drum which would more than enough......

And at the same time you're guaranteed consistent results with it, as well as obviously being able to reuse it. B)
