xdeadboltx Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 after all this time have got round to buying a knock sensor. going to give it a try and fit it myself and going to allow 2 days to do it lol. got it cheap £59 new subura part
Big 'D' Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 it takes about 30mins to fit Steady on fella, it takes about 30mins to fit if you know what you are doing, Tony take your time mate and if you get stuck just give me a bell Cheers Iain
xdeadboltx Posted May 16, 2010 Author Posted May 16, 2010 thanks will do. i am not that car engined minded person lol. to be honest dont even know where the spark plugs are on this car lol
Vimmy Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 No worries matey, it's well worth taking your time and doing all the research you need. No point in rushing the job just to find out something didnt go as you planned Cheers, Col
xdeadboltx Posted May 18, 2010 Author Posted May 18, 2010 well just changed the fuel filter took 5 mins . did the air filter in 1 hour . was alot harder to do than i thaught.
Vimmy Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Nice one matey, did you manage not to take the skin off your knuckles whilst doing it So what's next on your list?? Cheers, Col
xdeadboltx Posted May 19, 2010 Author Posted May 19, 2010 nuckles are still ok lol. next i was going to do the spark plugs, but after looking and found them i have decied its a tricky job, theres no room at all . going to give them a miss. So next is oil and filter change and at same time going to do knock sensor which i think the torgue setting is 24 NM , can u correct me if i am wrong pls
Vimmy Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Good to hear the hands are still in one piece I think that the battery and possibly water bottle have to come out one side and then airbox for the other side to get at the plugs, don't quote me but I think someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to correct me if I'm telling you fibs. I can't say for sure on the torque settings for the knock sensor, is that an extra sensor or one to replace the existing one? Cheers, Col
xdeadboltx Posted May 19, 2010 Author Posted May 19, 2010 the knock sensor i am replacing original due to fault 22 code

Cheers, Col Yep they do I think I've got my plugs to do at some stage as well Andy
xdeadboltx Posted May 19, 2010 Author Posted May 19, 2010 andy if u want a trial run u can test changing the plugs on mine if u want lol
michael_jenkins Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Which sensor did you go for out of interest? Been looking at them for myself. Some of them look horrible and would ruin the already tacky Subaru interior ;-) Cheers, Mike
michael_jenkins Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Ooh Ooh Ooh.....Just found this post, look about halfway down the page at the knock link mod. Pretty neat. I'm sure I could incorporate this into the dash somewhere? hmmmm..... Mike

Vimmy Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 (edited) Must be an invisible linkie if it's the one I've seen it relocates the knock link led's via longer wires and either runs them into the top of the under side of the dashboard. There was another where someone had moved the lights to a pillar mount pod...but for the life of me I can't remember where it is Talking of of knock links, I have a dead one here which after a bit of reverse engineering could be 'fixed' and put to some use Edited May 19, 2010 by Vimmy
michael_jenkins Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Sorry guys...one of those days! http://forums.sidc.co.uk/lofiversion/index...?t50025-50.html This is the pillar one. Quite like to do this to the top underside of the dash as you mentioned though Vimmy. Mike
Vimmy Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Here's the linkie for the underdash alternate location.... The knock link can be modified too so that rather than the 5 led's on it, it has 10 output pins to drive leds so you get a more gradual indication of oncoming knock - but thats something on a big mod list of mine..
Vimmy Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 (edited) So many different mods, so little time to do 'em all in I fitted a magnetic sump plug yesterday, it was a sod to fit as it kept on sticking to the side of the sump when it was being screwed in. Reminded me of James Bond trying to defuse a nuclear bomb Hopefully this sump plug should help draw in the swarf and keep it out of harms way. Edited May 21, 2010 by Vimmy
xdeadboltx Posted May 22, 2010 Author Posted May 22, 2010 (edited) yes that plug should work. i used to repair industrial sewing machines that had a oil sump, they had magnets at the bottom to collect any brocken needle heads etc. in 5 mins going to start on the knock sensor and do a oil change. and hours later lol oil and filter changed and the knock sensor which took alot of time since i have never tacken the intercooler off and was trying to rember hour Ian done it b4 lol. was a bit scary since wasnt sure how much force was needed to pull it off. Vimmy Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 I never liked taking off the top mount, it was always a pain in the derrier, now its easier to work on the car with a front mount on instead What final torque figure did you use for the knock sensor bolt?? Cheers, Col
xdeadboltx Posted May 23, 2010 Author Posted May 23, 2010 i used 24NM on the knock sensor and it seams strange driving the car without the engine light comming on and loosing power .
