corsa Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Well, thats the hawkeye 3 years old next month, 17k miles,no problems apart from new rear struts, new wheels and a battery all under warranty carried out by S&S. Now, i am NOT renewing the car NOR am i getting rid of it as i will be keeping it as a weekend toy, i dont take it on track or ragg it about ( too much). The question is a three parter so common sense answers please? 1, Do i take the extended warranty and if so what are the advantages/disadvatages? 2, Do i have to continue with the metasat tracker ( i want to keep it tracked) or can i switch companies, any ideas? 3. Subaru assist, do i continue or do i just cover it with the likes of the AA/RAC? Thanks in advance for any assistance. PS i am not modding the car any further nor spending any money on it ie ICE or styling so dont say save the warranty cash and spend it modding. Davie
scooby222 Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 1. depends how much the extended warranty is and if its a full warranty or a selected parts only - when mine came in think it was something silly like 400 for a year. if your not using a main dealer that goes a long way 2. no idea im afraid 3. probably aa/rac as subaru just sub it out to them anyway i believe and that way your covered with anycar, just got joint aa membership homestart, relay and assist for 120 quid with some haggling
hi_jac Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 PS i am not modding the car any further nor spending any money on it ie ICE or styling so dont say save the warranty cash and spend it modding.Davie You have answered your own question Davie. Happy motoring
thefastone Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Warranty - Dunno anything aobut it, its a minefield to be honest... 90% certain that to switch trackers, you need to have the old one removed and a new one fitted... To be honest, I'm not sure that it would be worth it in the slightest... RAC/AA if you have it anyways, then your probably just as well keeping that on... plus, once you have it, your covered for any car that you happen to be in... (even say, if its a friends car...)
mystery machine Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 1, Do i take the extended warranty and if so what are the advantages/disadvatages? I'm in a similar position with my Hawk STI - seriously considering extending the warranty for £400 because that's about half the price of supplying/fitting two shocks... and experience says I'm bound to need them soon! (already had two fitted under original warranty). Need to check the fine print, but it looks like the sensible thing to do if not planning any serious mods, and I'm usually very wary of extended warranties
sti pretender Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Warranty I wouldn't bother with unless you want your shocks covered. Save the £400 and put it towards new suspension. If your keeping the car for a long time is there a lifetime membership option, I did it after the free year from subaru as always planned on keeping the car for a good number of years. Are you with RBS? you get free breakdown for any car and takes you to the nearest garage. Used it at KH and paid the recovery company an extra £17 to take me to Hypertech. I think other banks also give you rewards for certain accounts.
gordi82 Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) If your not going to mod the car in anyway then I would recomend you extend the warranty as one claim would pay for its self. The chances of the car needing new shocks are high so in my opinion its worth it also if you take Subaru assist remember you get a loan car if yours is off the road. Money well spent I would say. hosstheboss Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) Got the letter in this week as well to renew on the RB and threw it in the bin after studying it. I couldn't make up my mind if the shocks would be covered as i've already had them done under warranty to the "upgraded" versions. As for modifications, the way I read it, and I could be wrong, but even putting on an aftermarket exhaust would invalidate the warranty -so the exhast goes and you must fit the original exhaust at over £1K - **** that, i'll put on an aftermarket one for half that and it will look and sound better. I will probably join the AA though, and probably before the Highland Fling!!! Will keep the tracker as is - seems good value for 100 euro's and is working fine (as i find out every time i set it off by accident!) Edited April 23, 2010 by hosstheboss
big den Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Hi Same situation here: 1 Didn't bother considering the extended warranty 2 will probably stay with metasat now comms problems seem to be resolved 3 Joined the RAC Den
colin_ross Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Bit out of my comfort zone answering these type of questions but will give it a go. 1, Do i take the extended warranty and if so what are the advantages/disadvatages? - No idea, never had a subaru that had a warranty before. 2, Do i have to continue with the metasat tracker ( i want to keep it tracked) or can i switch companies, any ideas? - As above, if they have a lifetime option and you're plan on keeping the car a while go for that. If not switch to a tracker that does give the option. 3. Subaru assist, do i continue or do i just cover it with the likes of the AA/RAC? - RAC for me. You can use about £26 worth of tesco points and get a years get you home cover. Bargain. The warranty would be a nice to have but if you put the cash to any repairs you know where you are. I'd hate to spend all that money, go to make a claim and they fight you over it.
mystery machine Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Just one point: Anecdotal evidence would suggest that replacing Subaru newage shocks/springs with third-party items certainly doesn't guarantee an end to suspension reliability woes...
burgy_51_ Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 A little question guys! Did yous get anything in the post about the warrenty is up and the car is due a M.O.T? My car was up this month and got nothing, luckly when i checked the reg form it was up the next day, i was always told u get a bit of notice when its due.
mystery machine Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Nobody is obliged to remind you when your MOT is due, although some garages will remind you purely in the interest of receiving your custom.
grantr Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 The extended warranty is not bad Davie, I got it when I bought my blobeye and I got 4 struts and a crankshaft pulley replaced under it. On the subject of struts, my rears are getting done by Nobles next week under parts warranty. My extended ran out last July and I never renewed, the struts were done August 08 and are still covered and are being replaced parts and labour under parts warranty with the uprated ones. I never renewed Subaru Assistance either, the one time I used them (crankshaft pulley), they came out, could fix. Shipped the car to Nobles, got me a hire car that was nothing but hassle to sort out, can do the same with the AA and cover the wifes and sons car as well for not much more.
corsa Posted April 25, 2010 Author Posted April 25, 2010 Thanks for all the replies guys, i will be speaking to my dealer re costs and any effect a modded car has on said warranty. The metasat thingy i will obtain costs and renew as the hassle of changing the unit is too much grief and i get enough of that these days. The breakdown cover i think i ll obtain quotations from subaru assist and RAC/AA then my mind will be made up. Will let you know finally what my choices are and any costs/deals that i manage to do. Davie
tomwrx08 Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 my hawkeye was 3 last month and was offered the same extended warranty ,thought it was a great offer until i found out that its max payout would be 1600 quid over the yr, its also has mileage limitations but as ures is a wkend car then that wont matter to u which is ok but if gearbox or engine, shocks etc go then u will still need to fork out plenty more, for standard parts that we all know still are crap and go again at anytime,

Re uprated struts, I heard that these haven't actually been uprated but that the strut tops were. Problem is, they still fail, in 6 months flat. Also, isn't there some sort of get-out in all of these insurance style warranties, in that design flaws are excluded, and the struts look like they fall into that category. Especially when folks consider buying insurance to cover an expected loss..... And surely it shouldn't cost £800 to replace duff shocks with "soon to be duff" shocks? Finally I have been told that any parts replaced under the new car warranty don't have a separate parts warranty but are warranted only until the new car warranty runs out, even if that is in 24 hours time.
