As already stated you do not need to enter the championship, you can enter individual events if you want. I posted the link for the championship website because it is a good source of information.

Unfortunately it is not as simple as applying for an event and being guaranteed an entry even if you have enterd a championship. Many events, particularly those up north, tend to be oversubscribed.

sometimes even regulars dont get an entry as they get filled very quickly esp up north

You can enter in to a championship and just do what ever event suits, that way you will have practically guaranteed there will be a space for you.

It's free entry as well to newcomers

Not necessarily at the bottom, you just need to finish so many meters (don't have Blue Book to hand, can't remember how many) higher than you start
