tommo9375 Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Took my 1995 Type Ra for it's MOT and found out it was overfuelling and the emiisions were too high .Checked the error codes on the ECU and got 2 , #23 -Mass Air Flow Sensor and # 33 vehicle speed sensor -can anyone help me resolve these and hopefully get it through it's mot. Car is fitted with an induction filter, zerosports ECU and standard jap exhaust with cats. The car does seem to use a lot of petrol and the air/fuel guage seems to fluxtuate from 9-13 when accelerating.
tommo9375 Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 (edited) Update; removed MAF today and cleaned ,reset ECU and cleared codes, took the car for a good spirited run and went to garage and tested emissions - still high 0.789 .Put car on ramp and had a look for Lambda sensor - haven't got one fitted instead i've got an Innovate broadband sensor connected to the headers.Need to get to the bottom of this problem ,anyone any ideas???? IDEAS; 1.Remove Innovate sensor and fit Lambda- need to check if sensor is wired into ECU or just linked to Gauge on pillar pod ?? 2.Fti a Z4 ECU and normal Lambda sensor ?? StewartyBoy Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Removal of the Lambda Sensor would throw a code up constantly so it must be looped through the ECU at somepoint. I would be going for the latter but will that alone stop the high emission reading?!
tommo9375 Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 Innovate wideband sensor is linked/looped into the Ecu,was wondering if i unplug it then fit a normal lambda sensor -would this correct the fuelling ?
StewartyBoy Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 (edited) Yes in theory it SHOULD, but if you have a decat then it may continuosly overfuel. I would suggest swapping the sensor first, yes. I would also check your MAF. Some have intermittent issues and not always throw up codes. Best to test with it plugged in and then not. If nothing changes then you have a fault there also. tommo9375 Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 Standard Subaru exhaust with 2 x cats is whats fitted, What do you mean by-Best to test with it plugged in and then not ,is this with the 2 black plugs connected and check codes?
tommo9375 Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 If i change the ECU to a Z4 is it a simple plug/play or will i need a re-map?? excuse my ignorance but not really clued up on ECU's .
wilky Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 If your car was manufactured before August 1996 and is an import you do not need a catalytic convertor and that changes the spectrum of any tests. You can prove the age of manufacture of you car by checking the labels on the seatbelts, these are made the same time the car is manufactured. Check what your V5 says you may need your date of manufacture put in. There is another way of checking with your VIN number the date of manufacture but Ive forgotten. Callum
euan_r Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 have you rechecked codes since resetting to see if maf code has reappeared? i would ditch the zerosports chip as its probably mapped for 100ron and very aggresive. no need to source another ecu, just remove chip inside and resolder resister j1, it will be the one cut. regards overfuelling if plugs are ok, i would change lambda for universal three wire bosch one as they are not dear and being fitted in early jap location of headers its probably had a fair heat up anyway.

No codes Euan, will look into removing chip and fitting new lambda sensor this week -only got 10 days before having to pay for a re-test
WUZ Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Thought the Innovate wideband was a 0-5v unit whereas the Zerosports and OE ECU need a narrowband 0-1v input to operate? Was the Wideband on th ecar when you bought it?
tommo9375 Posted November 4, 2009 Author Posted November 4, 2009 Yes wideband on car when i got it -ordered a bosch 3 wire lambda so i'll disconnect the wideband and try the bosch
tommo9375 Posted November 6, 2009 Author Posted November 6, 2009 Car passed MOT today I had to remove Zero-sports chip from ECU and resoldered resistor J1 which had been snipped due to chip being installed.I then fitted a new Bosch 3 wire lambda sensor and it passed no probs. Car isn't as responsive as before due to the ECU being back to standard, but it's still quick enough. Big thanks to euan r for his help and knowledge- due you a pint min.
cullenmin Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Big thanks to euan r for his help and knowledge- due you a pint min. I'm impressed with that bit of knowledge euan
euan_r Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 good to hear and that the car passed lol. just kent cause i use to have an old four plugged ecu car and did consider options avaliable at the time. chip would have been ok the now as it was running rich but i just personally wouldnt run an unknown map. better to be safe than sorry. nice to see youve sourced an airbox too. tbh russels post, as always, would identify the actual issue.
sczscoob Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Aye am impressed aswell! It's nae just about grinders & big hammers Euan, they've got you all wrong!!
