frankyboy Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 alright people buying my first scooby on thursday (well going to look at it ) what should i be looking out for its a R 1997 wagon running approx 283 bhp what are the faults i should be looking for ie rust, engine problems cheers
mystery machine Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Hello and welcome to the forum Good luck with the car hunting - look forward to seeing some pics once you've made a purchase (Some of the classic owners around here should hopefully be able to offer you buying advice.)
lumsden26 Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 i'd be looking for a service history and a list of the mod's that have been done, also get them to do a service and a timing belt change for piece of mind. just check the usual arches and sill's. also do a hpi check will tell you of its past. Hope this helps Mark
green_goblin Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Just have a good old listen to the engine, listen out for any chapping noises like piston slap etc, if you take it for a run have a look out the back when on boost to make sure its not blowing a whole lotta smoke out the back etc. Jase
Phil MC Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 I was also told to look out for a notchy gearbox, leaking turbo and all the usual car checks (Suspension/cv's/bearings/exhaust). I'm not sure about classics, but on my bug STi I can plug in my canbus fault code reader to see if there's anything logged up?
StewartyBoy Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Give it a good boot and make sure the car boost's. Lots of issues can arise from no or low boost. Rust tends to start on the rear arches, try and slide your finger through the rear linings to see if it has started on the inside of the metal. If its a UK car then fuelling should be fine, if Jap import the car needs to have been fuelled for UK RON 95-98. If I remember, 97-99 ECU had to be replaced to change the mapping so youll be looking at an APEXI Power FC and controller or something similar will have been fitted. As said above, listen for hard rattles or taps. Check belts and tensions, timing is easy its right at the front. Of cats have been removed, if a private sale ask for them if possible. Emissions are high at MOT and most likely it will fail. No questions too stoopid, just ask!
frankyboy Posted October 13, 2009 Author Posted October 13, 2009 hiya guys its a uk turbo he has admitted there is surface rust on arches the guy seems genuine but i have been stung before and my right foot usually makes the decision rather than my head so just trying to get as much info on them as possible this is advert spec; 97 uk turbo,440 sti injectors, walbro fuel pump,sti4 top mount, cat back de-cat system(nice note)new hks induction kit and blitz bov been set up but could do with a map, also got a decat front pipe and also got a fmic that needs a bit of repair. the car also has full koni shocks and springs and drilled and grooved discs and yellow stuff pads all round. standard interior in very good condition.cristal clear lights and raised bonnet to help cooling(old rs mod) It also has some one off jap graphics on it to( easily removed if you dont like)I just got a full arch kit for it to like the wr1s have these are made for the classic and will look great once painted and sprayed. She is sitting on 18" wolfrace alloys with good tyres on. Has only done 84k with part history but since i have owned it it has had the oil and filter changed every 2.5k-3k miles.moted 11month tax til end of jan. There is some rust on the rear arch but been quoted £150 to fix and put arch kit on.HKS turbo timer also and got a boost gauge aswell, this car is always warmed up and cooled down.cat 1 alarm and immob to. any more advice will be appriciated
mystery machine Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 There is some rust on the rear arch but been quoted £150 to fix and put arch kit on.Call me cynical, but it's hard to understand how anyone could make a proper job of that for only 150 bucks... a "tart it up'n'sell it" job, p'raps...JMO, but maybe worth budgeting for a wee bit more if it looks like the arches are going to need fixed.
scooby222 Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 as above and the usual checks for crash damage, also check the top of the windscreen for rust spots on the roof edge, quite common on uk cars good luck with it!!

jimmy_AyrshireScoobs Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 no offence mate but who puts wolfrace alloys on a scooby?they are for saxo's and corsa's only. plus it will need a new maf sensor soon now that its got an induction kit fitted.jap imports tend not to rust that much,uk cars aint that bad either compared to fords ect, only thing that will cause problems is the fuel filler pipe. sounds like its been boy racered to me (wide arch kit, wolfrace, induction kit, stickers) thats just me tho apart from the obvious, check for the problems as listed above just remember mate mileage aint everything with scoobs,i could import a car with 30k on the clock and constantly thrash it for 10k,sell it at 40k miles and no-one would ever guess untill it blows. welcome to the forum mate
Midnight21 Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Where is the car from? and what sorta price (or did I miss that lol) maybe someone on here knows the car?? .
kennyuk300 Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Hi mate ,when it reads STI4 top mount and also FMIC does this mean there are two intercoolers ? why? Good luck mate hope you get a good one in the end. Cheers Kenny
StewartyBoy Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 If your in doubt over the car take a few pics when you go to see it and post em up. They might be cheaper to buy now, but are'nt cheap when they go bang and it will if it's been thrashed. Jap cars will last a long time, but only if well looked after. The wheel strike me as the boyracers choice and the "could do with a map" concerns the **** out of me. How long has it been that way!? Part history...!?? What's your budget mate. I'm sure with all the enthusiasts and knowledge on here, we could find you a decent car.
