silverdoo Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 hi all , looking for some hints on this one please , i have a (99) turbo , now and again i get some smoke from under the bonnet . it is not dark smoke . i have been told it may be the front crankshaft seal caused by maybe a blocked breather pipe , i am not very upto date on these engines so need help . local mechanic i use said it could just be wear and tear on the seal but also caused by back pressure . Any ideas will be very much appreciated thanks
Joe G Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 could be crankshaft seal or rocker cover gaskets. It happened to me with my old classic and turned out to be the rocker cover gaskets. Joe
silverdoo Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 joe , i have replaced the rocker gaskets already mate , thanks for the reply .
jodie typeRA Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 (edited) sounds like cam seal mate,,or it could be a rocker cover,,,the smoke will be a small bit of oil getting onto you manifold then burning off.... put a bit cardboard/ paper under your car tonight then check it in the morning,,this should point you to the problem part/tell you where the leak is......if it is the cam seal you might aswell put a new timeing belt kit on aswell... bit slow Edited July 20, 2009 by jodie typeRA
silverdoo Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 jodie , do you recon the guy talking about a blocked breather , might be the case , do i need to do more investigation ? dont want to get crank seal done and it goes again . I have been told the crank seals are common .
jodie typeRA Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 yeh man the crank seal is a common thing on scoobs....cant say ive heard of the blocked breather thing b4...then again i aint no sanner monkey ......if you can the the timing belt case off without taking the belts of..you will know for sure if it the front crank seal ............dont rule out your rocker cover (thant youve already done) you wont be the firts person not to get it seald properly...worth checking
