mystery machine Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I'm smelling petrol while stationary and idling. Only ever appears once the engine has warmed up and cannot be smelt when on the move. It's been there since I bought the car a couple of months back. Had the dealer check it out, but they weren't able to find a leak or anything else obvious. However, I'd like to know what's causing it... Any idea what this could be? Car is a '06 STI. Cheers.
kookamunga Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 has it got an induction kit or an atmospheric dump valve fitted it these are the usual causes of the the smell of fuel when idling don't worry unless to see flames
kennyuk300 Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Hi mate had something similar with my car turned out it was a broken uppipe could not smell it whilst driving just idling. Cheers kenny
mystery machine Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 (edited) has it got an induction kit or an atmospheric dump valve fitted it these are the usual causes of the the smell of fuel when idling don't worry unless to see flames It hasn't been fitted with an induction kit and I'm not sure whether an aftermarket dump valve has been fitted. It does give off a quite noticeable (and rather appealing) whooshing sound between gear changes, but not quite the sharp 'pssssssst' I would have expected to hear from a non-OEM dump valve. How would I know if an atmospheric DV has been fitted? How might it differ in appearance from the standard 'recirculation valve'? (if that's the correct term - my experience fiddling around with turbo'd motors is practically nil). Cheers. I suppose that wouldn't rule out air leaks and the like around the turbo either. Hmmmm.

Take a pic of the DV and post it up and ask someone else with a similiar car if its the same as theirs
mystery machine Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 (edited) Take a pic of the DV and post it up and ask someone else with a similiar car if its the same as theirs Cheers John, good plan - I'll try to do that. In the meantime - just so's I know which bit to photograph - can someone confirm or otherwise that the arrowed component in the following pic is the factory recirc valve: [pic removed] Edited July 20, 2009 by Mystery Machine
mystery machine Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 Looks like the standard dumpy to me Cheers min. Just to be clear, that pic isn't my car - just wanted to know which bit to point the camera at
mystery machine Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 Here it is - slightly surprised at how dirty/tarnished it looks compared with other bits and bobs around the engine bay: Looks like a factory part as far as I can tell, what do you reck?
mystery machine Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 P.S. Can anyone recommend a method of removing deid beasts from one's intercooler?
ciaranrb5 Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 that is the standard recirc indeed. My car currently smells of melting plastic after driving due to a plastic bag melting itself onto the down pipe.
dipsy Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 P.S. Can anyone recommend a method of removing deid beasts from one's intercooler? Used a dyson hoover with brush fitting did the job and no bent fins on the intercooler
mystery machine Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 that is the standard recirc indeed. Cheers for confirming, mate My car currently smells of melting plastic after driving due to a plastic bag melting itself onto the down pipe.
mystery machine Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 Used a dyson hoover with brush fitting did the job and no bent fins on the intercooler Cheers for the tip I did consider the hoover, but thought that might be a bit wacky... the neighbours are going to love this Huvnae got a Dyson, but never mind - p'raps I could take the Panasonic upright across to Andy Forrest for a couple mods prior to doing the job!
