What Have I Done To My Car

Right

On the way to work about 10mins ago i dropped from 5th to 4th and put the foot down. The car was warm at this point.

I go to change gear and hear NO dumpvalve - all i get is LOADS of turbo chatter - It actually sounded like the turbo got flooded with it as it chatterered then it just sounded like it stopped and let loads of air out.

Im STILL hitting full boost tho - No warning lights on the dash - ALL intercooler pipes connected.

NO smoke on boost

NO smoke on idle

What have i done?

Cheers in advance

First guess is a dodgy dump valve.. Possible too stiff a spring.. if the dump valve piston didn't open with the surge in pressure then it would not have made a sound and forced the air back down to the turbo causing the chatter..

I get it every so often if changing at low rpm but not all the time but that's because I've tightened the dump valve up a bit to improve response between gear changes..

Ahhhh right - Will have a look round the car after work

Is it bad running it the way it is as i need to get it home later (6 miles)

It was fine before the gear change and was dumping as normal

Cheers dude

Probably best to take it easy.. I hear the TD0 series of turbos are pretty stong buggers of things. Other aftermarket ones are a bit softer to this sort of issue.. But it is putting the wrong sort of force on the propellor which when running really hot could in buckle it which ain't good..

There was a post here recently about removing BOV's and just stuckign a blanking plate over it. Safe in the sense no air excapes fromt the system, but bad because it causes the turbo to stall.. Which doesn't do much good at all, except give you a slight "squirrel mincer" sound :o

A non dumping dump valve would be my fist guess also. What sort have you got, oe or after market?

You can still drive the car fine but I'd keep the boost down till you get it sorted.

yea its looking like that as it sounded like something went wrong mid dump lol

I will take it off later and have a look at it

its an aftermarket one

Cheers lads

How can i tell it the dump valve is buggered?

The sympons you speak off suggest it could be buggered.. It can depend on the valve.. One test to see if it's jammed is to remove it and try pushign teh piston up by hand.. Some are tighter than others (ooh err!) If it's aint budging, coulg be a stuck piston.. Some models can be serviced.. Just be sure not to wildly stick screwdrivers or sharp objects in tehre incase you damage the piston, shoudl be possible to push back the piston by hand/thumb..

lol @ wildy stick screwdrivers in it - DAM thats my style aswell

Cool will check it after work - If all else fails i will speak to come people around here an get another valve on it to test it

Cheers for the help

Also check the vacuum pipe(6 or 8mmm) one thats connected to it. if there is a leak on it it wont pull it open when required.

UPDATE

Took the car back to mine at lunch

the d/v started working as normal again but then about 3 miles later - started doing the chattering with no dump

I assume the dump valve may be goosed/stuck

I stopped, popped the bonnet and gave it a rev - just a chatter no DV movement - Assisted the DV with a screw driver then gave it a rev an it dumped as normal.

Is there anyway to free off the D/V or any reason it would be sticking?

Or could there be another problem

Some can be taken apart for cleaning, adjustment etc - some can't. I'm not familiar with that brand but the guys on the above link should be able to help.
