psigeek Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Does anyone know where I can get a decent and safe engine steam clean? Main reason being there's some oil in the engine bay where I had a small leak and it's really difficult to get to so would like it all cleaned off. I don't know anywhere that does it. Does anyone here?
kentperformance Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I think the problem is that 'safe' and 'steam clean' doesn't really go together. I wouldn't really advise a steam clean unless they were really, really careful, as there's lot's to damage otherwise.
psigeek Posted March 4, 2009 Author Posted March 4, 2009 Really . How does one go about cleaning those unreachable places?
lumpy Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 im in same situation need mine steam cleaned not to sure where to go or what to do so be watching this thread
darryl_martin Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 A long handled paint brush, might be a radiator brush, can reach most places in the engine bay if you haven't tried it. Think they're about £3?
kentperformance Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Depends on where you are trying to clean, unless the engine is completely covered in grime, we would get at the area in question with brake and parts cleaner. It evaporates and really shifts oil and engine grime. There are not really any areas on an Impreza engine that you can't get to.
granby Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Have a read of this, should give you a good idea of what to do http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/guides_engine.html

This is good stuff, i went through a couple of cans and its pressurised so it pushed dirt away, evapourates leaving it shiny and clean. if you use a paint brush aswel you can really clean up all the cables around the engine bay. Excuse the quality but here is my engine bay.

emoe Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 DONT steam clean your engine!!! Holy god!! yorue asking for trouble doing that! which is why any reputable company that details cars doesnt steam clean them anymore!! If you want to clean your engine, then elbow grease and time is what you need. Steam cleaning gets into all the switchgear, inside sensors, connectors, between the cable attachments striping the grease and lubrication making them rust and snap, ruins the weatherproofing on the main artery loom connectors, gets into any tiny breather hole and basically leaves you with an engine that will cause you more problems than a nymphomaniac hooker wife!
psigeek Posted March 5, 2009 Author Posted March 5, 2009 ^^Blimey. OK thanks for the advice. I think I'm looking to go along the lines in that link that Granby posted. It's difficult when one garage says yeah go get it steam cleaned and then others say don't. I'm leaning towards the don't now! Thanks for the reply.
eureka Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 use auto glym engine cleaner and a good 2 days you will get there

psigeek Posted March 5, 2009 Author Posted March 5, 2009 Another lovely clean engine skullfudge. Considering the near overwhelming consensus on here think I'm gonna get some product in and set aside some days. If I manage to get it done soon I'll post. Thanks for everyone's help.
